Things to Do in Lake Como with Kids: Villa Monastero

Located on the scenic shores of Lake Como, Villa Monastero in Varenna is a must-visit stop for families exploring this charming part of Northern Italy. Just a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal and town center, it’s the perfect half-day destination for a relaxed family outing.

From Monastery to Villa History

Originally built as a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century, Villa Monastero evolved over time into an elegant lakeside villa. Today, it’s known for its stunning historic architecture, panoramic lake views, and peaceful atmosphere.

Botanical Gardens to Explore with Kids

The villa’s botanical gardens were the highlight for our family. Stretching nearly 2 km along the lake, they feature over 900 species of exotic trees and plants—from palm trees to azaleas and citrus. The kids loved exploring the winding paths and open spaces. Since there are many steps and uneven trails, we recommend leaving strollers at the entrance for easier exploring.

Tickets and Café Stop

Visitors can buy tickets for the gardens alone or bundle them with access to the villa’s 14 historic rooms. We chose to enjoy the gardens this time as the kids needed to burn off some energy. On the property there is also a small lakeside café for drinks and quick bites.

Why Families Love Villa Monastero

With its mix of history, nature, and lakeside charm, Villa Monastero is a great family-friendly attractions in Lake Como. Our kids enjoyed the gardens, and the lake views were incredible.
