Family-Friendly Restaurants in Engelberg: Where to Eat

Located just 40 minutes south of Lucerne in Canton Obwalden, the alpine resort town of Engelberg is an easy, rewarding day trip for families. Whether you are heading up Mount Titlis in winter or exploring Brunni’s hiking trails in summer, finding family-friendly restaurants in Engelberg where kids can unwind and parents can enjoy a good meal is the perfect way to recharge after a busy day.

Here is our family guide to restaurants, cheese shops, and mountain eateries in Engelberg.

Family-Friendly Spots in Engelberg Town

Restaurant Alpenclub

Set right in Engelberg’s historic village center, Restaurant Alpenclub dates back to 1875. It pairs a traditional alpine atmosphere with thoughtful, kid-friendly amenities, making it an easy win for families.

  •  What to eat: Traditional Swiss favorites (schnitzel, cordon bleu, and cheese fondue) alongside wood-fired pizza and pasta. The adults enjoyed pizza and cordon bleu, while our kids stuck with pasta. You can order individual-sized pizzas in small or large portions, which made it easy for our crew to share.
  •  Why parents love it: They are remarkably well-prepared for children. You will find high chairs, changing tables, coloring menus, and an armoire stocked with board games and toys.
  •  The views: Snag a table on the terrace. We spent our meal taking in mountain panoramas and watching paragliders land nearby.
  •  Family tip: If you visit during the autumn cow parade (Alpabfahrt), the terrace is the perfect perch to listen for cowbells and step out to see the decorated cattle up close.

Chäs im Kloster Engelberg (Show Dairy)

Tucked inside the grounds of the Benedictine Monastery, Chäs im Kloster Engelberg is both a working show dairy and a specialty food shop.

  •  What to eat & buy: On-site fondue, local wine, fresh baked goods, and ice cream for the kids. We grabbed local cheeses to bring home—the garlic Raclette was delicious.
  •  The experience: Before or after stopping in, take a quiet walk through the monastery gardens.
  •  Family tip: They offer hands-on cheese-making workshops. We didn’t take one on this trip, but it is high on our list as a top rainy-day family activity in Engelberg. Check out their website for more information.

Mountain Dining: Where to Eat on Titlis & Brunni

Lago Torbido at Trübsee (Mount Titlis)

If you are spending the day on Mount Titlis, you will find several dining options ranging from quick-service cafeterias to sit-down spots. We opted for Lago Torbido, located right at the Trübsee middle station.

  •  What to eat: Hearty Italian staples—pasta, pizza, and regional specialties.
  •  Why it works with kids: A sit-down meal offers a much-needed break from the snow or summer hiking trails. The children’s menu includes coloring sheets, which bought us plenty of peaceful downtime.
  •  Know before you go: Reservations are highly recommended, as mountain spots fill up quickly on sunny weekends and peak ski weeks. Bookings can be made easily online. Operating hours change seasonally (and mountain venues often close during spring and late-fall maintenance shoulder seasons), so always check their official website before heading up.

Berglodge Restaurant Ristis (Brunni)

Located in the Brunni area, Berglodge Restaurant Ristis is practically built for families. It offers two sections: a budget-friendly self-service cafeteria and a full-service dining room, both opening onto panoramic mountain terraces.

  •  What to eat: Classic Swiss Rösti topped with melted Raclette cheese, burgers, and standard kid favorites (chicken tenders, pasta, and hot dogs).
  •  The highlight for kids: There is a large outdoor playground right next to the terrace, giving kids space to burn off energy while parents finish their meals at a relaxed pace.
  •  Surprise visitor: Globi—the beloved Swiss cartoon character—made an unexpected appearance while we were there, which our kids loved.
  •  Family tip: The restaurant sits right at the start and finish of Brunni’s Globi-themed hiking trails, making it the ideal lunch reward after a morning trek. Tables fill up fast during peak holiday periods, and seasonal lift or restaurant closures apply during maintenance periods, so be sure to verify operating dates in advance.
