Things to Do in Füssen with Kids: A Family Guide to Reptilienzoo Allgäu

If you are searching for things to do in Füssen with kids, Reptilienzoo Allgäu is a good indoor stop in Bavaria, Germany. Opened in 2016 inside a repurposed industrial factory hall, this family-friendly attraction now houses nearly 200 species. The German state government even officially recognizes it as an educational, public-benefit institution equal to municipal zoos. Best of all, it sits just a five-minute drive from Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle, making it the perfect one-hour break for our family on a rainy day.

The Animals: What You Will See

Our family was surprised by the incredible variety packed into this space. The zoo features:

  • Venomous & non-venomous snakes: Cobras, pythons, and vipers
  • Lizards & crocodilians: Iguanas, chameleons, Gila monsters, and caimans
  • Invertebrates & amphibians: Tarantulas, leaf insects, and axolotls
  • Turtles & tortoises

Every terrarium has a detailed educational plaque listing the animal’s name, natural habitat, and biological facts. Note that these signs are in German, but they are easy to translate using a camera translation app on your phone.

Kid-Friendly Touches & Highlights

  • Step stools for little ones: Lightweight stools are placed throughout the walkways, making it easy for our kids to slide them over and see inside the taller enclosures.
  • Interactive staff: The keepers let our kids hold a giant leaf insect and invited us over to watch a live snake feeding.
  • Ceiling ant highway: One of our favorite exhibits was a transparent tube system running overhead. We loved watching leafcutter ants carry leaves across the ceiling all the way back to their nest.
  • Cleanliness & habitat quality: While a few enclosures felt slightly compact, every habitat was exceptionally clean and well-decorated, and the animals looked healthy and active.

The Lech River Shoreline

The zoo sits directly on the banks of the Lech River. After our indoor tour, our kids spent twenty minutes skipping flat stones along the rocky shoreline.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

If you need a rainy-day activity near Neuschwanstein Castle, Reptilienzoo Allgäu is definitely worth a stop. It offers a fun, interactive escape from bad weather. Our kids loved the hands-on encounters, and an hour was the ideal amount of time to explore before continuing our Bavarian road trip.
