If you are visiting King Ludwig’s fairy-tale palaces and searching for family apartments near Neuschwanstein, a peaceful lakefront base makes all the difference. We recently stayed at Seehotel Schnöller. It is a former dairy farm turned family-run boutique hotel. The property sits directly on the shores of Forggensee in Bavaria’s Allgäu region. You can enjoy wide views of the Bavarian Alps. You can also see both Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle right from the grounds. Best of all, it is only a 15-minute drive to the castles. It is also an easy 3-hour drive from Zurich, Switzerland. Here is why this property worked so well for our family vacation.
The Apartment: Space to Breathe with Kids
Seehotel Schnöller offers nine fully furnished holiday apartments. Units range from 45 to 90 square meters. We stayed in the Deluxe Apartment with Balcony. Waking up to views of the lake, the Alps, and the distant castles was amazing.
- Parent Tip: There is no elevator on-site. If you use strollers or need step-free access, book a ground-floor unit.
- Space & Layout: The unit had two separate bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. That extra half-bath saved us a lot of morning prep time.
- Full Kitchen: The kitchen was fully equipped. It included a dishwasher, which is a lifesaver on family trips. We ate breakfast at the dining table every morning while enjoying the view.
- Overall Vibe: Clean, simply furnished, functional, and very comfortable.

- Kids’ Playroom: Our children’s favorite spot. It sits on the ground floor. It includes a play kitchen, dollhouses, board games, a ping-pong table, and foosball.
- Direct Lake Access: A private lawn with sun loungers, a swim pier, and easy water access into Lake Forggensee.
- Wellness & Fitness Area: Saunas, a compact gym, and a quiet relaxation lounge facing the water.
- Breakfast Service: Available for an extra fee. It features fresh breads, local cheeses, salami, cereal, and fruit. High chairs are available.
- Honesty Fridge: Located on the ground floor and stocked with cold drinks. Simply write down what you take and pay at checkout.
- Parking & EV Charging: Free outdoor parking on-site with dedicated electric vehicle chargers.
- Front Desk: Friendly, helpful staff. They gave us great local tips and parking advice for Neuschwanstein Castle.
