The historic city of Zug sits right on the scenic shores of Lake Zug, where fishing has shaped the old town’s heritage for centuries. To preserve and showcase this unique heritage, the Fischerei Museum Zug (Zug Fishing Museum) offers a look into local aquatic life and traditions. Our family recently visited during International Museum Day in May—when admission is completely free—and spent about an hour exploring this local attraction. If you are looking for educational things to do in Zug with kids, here is what you can expect from a visit.
Exploring the Museum Exhibits
Note: The museum is spread across multiple levels connected by stairs, so it is not fully stroller-accessible inside.
The Ground Floor: An Active Fish Hatchery
The ground floor houses a show breeding facility that has been operational since 1883. This facility hatches fish eggs using lake water to help stock the streams and lakes throughout the region. While the canton operates larger hatcheries elsewhere, this specific location gives visitors an up-close look at the delicate process of caring for eggs until they hatch. The egg-hatching technique displayed here was actually invented right in Zug and is now used by fisheries all over the world! Our kids loved looking into the tanks to spot the various local fish species.
Upper Floors: Artifacts and History
The upper two floors house a collection of historical fishing artifacts. You will find everything from vintage fishing poles and baits to specialized nets—including some uniquely designed to catch eels. The top floor features a short documentary film (in German).
Our Takeaway: This museum is a fantastic stop for young fishing enthusiasts. My son is a massive fish fan and absolutely loved it. The staff here are incredibly welcoming and took the time to answer all of his eager questions. To get the most out of your visit, we recommend booking a guided tour, as the passionate team shares insights you might otherwise miss.

Making a Day of It: Things to Do in Zug with Kids
Because the historic center is pedestrian-friendly, it is a very safe and relaxing place to explore with a stroller or young children. While you are in the area, we highly recommend checking out these nearby family favorites:
- The Aviary (Ornithologischer Verein der Stadt Zug): A small, free aviary located right along the lake that our kids always enjoy visiting.
- Lucy Goose Ice Creamery: Our absolute favorite ice cream spot in Zug, located just a short walk from the museum.
Final Thoughts
The Fischerei Museum Zug is an excellent educational stop, especially if you have a child fascinated by marine life. Because it is compact, it won’t tire out little legs and pairs perfectly with a stroll through the historic town center. Be sure to check the museum’s website ahead of time to book a guided tour or to verify their seasonal opening hours.
