Our family spent a memorable half day exploring Varenna, a charming lakeside village on Lake Como. We arrived by ferry from Bellagio, eager to see this picturesque town. With the kids in tow, we enjoyed a day of exploring gardens, strolling along the lakeside, and eating delicious Italian food.

Varenna Overview: Location and History
Varenna is nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Como, directly across from Bellagio and Menaggio. This small town dates back to Roman times and has long been a favorite for travelers seeking a quieter, more authentic experience on the lake. Its narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and breathtaking views make it a postcard-worthy destination.

Family-Friendly Activities: Exploring the Gardens
One of the highlights of our visit was the botanical gardens at Villa Monastero. Overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Como, the gardens are home to more than 900 species of rare and exotic trees and plants. We wandered through groves of towering palms, vibrant azaleas, and fragrant citrus trees, with the kids running ahead to explore every corner. Since there are many stairs, we left our stroller at the entrance, which made it easier for the kids to roam freely. For more information on a visit to Villa Monastero, click here. Although we didn’t have time to visit Villa Cipressi, it’s another popular villa in Varenna known for its beautiful gardens and historic architecture.

Where to Eat in Varenna
Finding a place to eat in July was a bit of a challenge—Varenna gets busy! I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit in peak season. We were lucky to grab a lakeside table at Alma Bistrot, where we shared a delicious pizza with the kids. The restaurant was welcoming to families, offering baby chairs and a relaxed atmosphere. After lunch, we explored a few of the souvenir shops that line the water’s edge.

Arriving by Ferry: Tips for Families
Arriving by ferry from Bellagio was easy and scenic. The port has a small playground, which was a hit with our kids, though it’s not shaded and can get hot in the summer. The port isn’t right in the town center, so you’ll need to walk the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (The Lover’s Walk) for about 5–10 minutes to reach the main part of Varenna. The path is lined with a distinctive red fence and offers beautiful lake views, with a few stairs along the way. Our lightweight yo-yo stroller was easy to fold and carry, which helped a lot.

Varenna is a wonderful spot for families looking to experience the beauty of Lake Como at a relaxed pace. Whether you’re wandering through botanical gardens, enjoying lakeside pizza, or simply soaking in the views, it’s a place that invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment.
