Menaggio Lake Como Travel Guide: Top Tips for Families and Sightseeing

Nestled on the western shore of Lake Como, Menaggio is a charming lakeside town in the heart of the region. Its central location makes it the perfect base for exploring the lake’s most famous destinations. The town itself is delightful, with many restaurants, shops, and, of course, our favorite-gelato. We visited Menaggio in spring, which was lovely as we avoided the crowds, and the location was ideal for exploring other parts of the lake. We quickly learned that Lake Como is better explored by foot or ferry than by car.

Exploring the City

Exploring Menaggio with family is a delight. The town is mostly flat and very pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to stroll with kids or strollers. The vibrant Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi is the heart of Menaggio, surrounded by historic buildings, shops, and cafés, always bustling with local life. Just steps away, the lakeside promenade offers stunning mountain views and a small rocky beach where our kids happily spent ages tossing stones into the water.

Restaurants and Gelato

For meals and treats, Menaggio’s main square is lined with excellent options. We loved Il Ristorante di Paolo for its classic Italian dishes and welcoming atmosphere. For dessert, La Fabrica del Gelato is a must-this artisanal gelateria offers a range of delicious flavors, all just off the piazza and close to shopping. Where to Stay

When it comes to accommodation, Menaggio offers everything from lakeside hotels to hillside Airbnbs. We stayed up on the hill in an Airbnb with spectacular lake views but found it too steep to walk back with the kids. Parking in Menaggio is extremely limited, so every morning we arrived early to secure a spot at Parking Commune di Menaggio. From our experience, staying within walking distance of the center is a big advantage, as driving and parking around Lake Como is challenging-even in the off-season.

Ferry Station

The ferry station is just a six-minute walk from the main square, making day trips easy. Menaggio’s central position means you can reach Bellagio and other towns quickly by boat, and the lake views from the ferry are unforgettable. Our kids loved every minute on the water, and tickets are easily purchased at the station.

All in all, Menaggio offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, family-friendly charm, and convenient access to the best of Lake Como, making it an ideal destination for travelers of all ages.
