Exploring the Lion Monument in Lucerne: A Family Adventure

One of Lucerne’s most iconic landmarks is the Lion Monument. This majestic sculpture, nestled in a serene park setting, is not only beautiful but also tells a poignant story of bravery and loyalty. Located about a 12-minute walk from the Chapel Bridge in Old Town, entrance to the monument is free. Plan to spend 15–30 minutes taking pictures and reflecting on its history.

The History Behind the Monument

The Lion Monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution. On August 10, 1792, revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, where the Swiss Guards were defending King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they fought valiantly until nearly all were killed or captured. The names of 26 officers who died are inscribed below the monument.

Visiting the Monument

As you approach the monument, you’ll be struck by the imposing figure of a dying lion, its body pierced by a spear, resting on shields bearing the French fleur-de-lis and Swiss cross. The Latin inscription “Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti” honors the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss Guards. While the front of the monument tends to be crowded, quieter viewpoints can be found by climbing stairs to either side.
