Learn to Build an Igloo at 2,570m in Davos Klosters, Switzerland

Ever wondered what it takes to build an igloo? Our family, along with another, signed up for a taster course at Iglu-Dorf to learn the art of igloo construction. Nestled high in the mountains, this unique experience offered stunning alpine views and plenty of fun.

The Igloo-Building Adventure

Under the guidance of an instructor, we learned how to measure and cut ice blocks using saws. The instructor even demonstrated using a chainsaw to prepare the blocks, which were then transported on sleds to the building site nearby. While some kids were more enthusiastic than others, my daughter had a blast being pulled along on sleds with the ice blocks. My son got creative and built a mailbox for our igloo! Though we couldn’t finish within the one-hour timeframe, our instructor kindly extended the session so we could complete it. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone—make sure to dress warmly! Lunch in an Igloo Restaurant

After working up an appetite, we took a break to enjoy fondue at the Igloo restaurant—a magical experience dining inside an igloo. For families, they also offer pasta dishes for kids. For more information, click here

Getting There

To reach the building site, take two funiculars from Davos Dorf: first to Mittelstation and then up to Weissfluhjoch. From there, it’s a 15-20 minute walk following signs to Iglu-Dorf. Note that sleds aren’t allowed, so dragging our 3-year-old wasn’t an option. Keep in mind the steep climb back to the funicular—it’s worth planning your return before the last train departs!
