Exploring Villa Monastero in Varenna: Family Fun and Botanical Gardens on Lake Como

Nestled along the sparkling shores of Lake Como, Villa Monastero in Varenna is a great destination for families exploring this picturesque region of northern Italy. Located just a short stroll from the ferry terminal and the charming town center (about 10 minutes), the villa is perfectly situated for a family outing. We planned to spend about 1–2 hours here, which was just right for soaking up the beauty and history without feeling rushed.

From Monastery to Elegant Villa: A Rich Historical Journey

Villa Monastero’s story is as enchanting as its setting. Originally built as a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century, the property was gradually transformed over the centuries into an elegant lakeside villa. Today, it is celebrated not only for its stunning architecture but also for the expansive botanical gardens that wrap around the estate, offering a fascinating glimpse into its storied past.

Exploring the Botanical Gardens: A Natural Playground for Kids

The gardens are truly the highlight for families. Spanning nearly 2 kilometers along the lakefront, the botanical garden is home to more than 900 species of rare and exotic trees and plants. We were amazed by the variety—from towering palms to vibrant azaleas and fragrant citrus trees. The kids had a blast running along the winding paths. Since there are quite a few stairs and uneven paths, we left our stroller at the entrance, which made it much easier to explore freely.

Tickets, Tours, and Treats: Planning Your Visit

When you arrive, you’ll find tickets available for either the gardens alone or a combined ticket that includes a tour of the villa’s interior. We opted to skip the villa this time and let the kids roam the gardens, but for those interested, the villa offers 14 beautifully decorated rooms to explore. After wandering the grounds, there is a small lakeside café that serves drinks, snacks, and light meals—a perfect spot to recharge and take in the lake views.

Villa Monastero is a wonderful family-friendly destination that combines history, natural beauty, and a touch of adventure. Whether you’re keen to delve into the villa’s past or simply want to let your kids run wild among the flowers and fountains, this is a spot that promises lasting memories. If you’re visiting Lake Como with your family, be sure to add Villa Monastero in Varenna to your itinerary!
