Lisbon Aquarium with Kids: Oceanário de Lisboa Family Guide

If you are putting together an itinerary of the best things to do in Lisbon with kids, the Oceanário de Lisboa belongs right at the top. Built for Expo ’98 in the modern Parque das Nações district, it is widely considered one of the best aquariums in the world—and it was easily one of our family’s favorite stops in Portugal. Beyond the massive exhibits, we loved its strong focus on marine conservation, scientific research, and ocean sustainability.

The centerpiece is the breathtaking Central Aquarium, a massive tank holding 5 million liters (1.3 million gallons) of saltwater. Walking in and seeing enormous manta rays, whitetip reef sharks, and a giant ocean sunfish drifting past was a true jaw-dropper for our kids. The layout is brilliant: the central tank spans two levels, giving you completely different vantage points as you walk through the upper and lower galleries. Four distinct habitats branch off the central tank, representing the Atlantic, Antarctic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Our Family Highlights:
  •  Playful Sea Otters: Watching the otters swim in their enclosure was mesmerizing. We were fortunate to catch them active, as a sign noted they aren’t always visible—especially during naptime—so make sure to set expectations with the kids.
  •  Unique Marine Life: Don’t miss the leafy seadragons, cuttlefish, and colorful coral reef tanks.
  •  Immersive Temporary Exhibits: We loved the deep-sea displays featuring life-sized models of prehistoric ammonites, giant turtles, and ocean predators.
Practical Tips for Visiting with Kids:
  •  Timing & Duration: Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours here. It’s fully air-conditioned, making it an ideal escape from the Lisbon summer heat.
  • Language & Signage: Signage and exhibit descriptions throughout the aquarium are in both English and Portuguese.
  •  Stroller Accessibility: The aquarium is fully accessible with elevators and ramps throughout. However, wide or double strollers can be tricky to maneuver through crowds directly in front of the glass during peak hours.
  •  Lockers & Restrooms: On-site lockers are available near the entrance to store daypacks and heavy gear.
  •  Discounts: Book tickets online in advance for an automatic discount, or check with your hotel concierge (we scored 10% off through ours). Before leaving, look for the QR-code survey near the exit for a discount at the gift shop.
  •  Guided Tours: We considered booking a guided tour, but couldn’t fit one into our schedule. They offer options in both English and Portuguese, including group tours, behind-the-scenes access, and feeding/training sessions.
  •  Getting There & Add-ons: It’s easy to reach by public transit or a quick Uber. If you drive, we parked at the nearby Estacionamento Parque das Nações garage. If you have extra time, consider pairing your aquarium visit with a ride on the Telecabine Lisboa cable car along the Tagus River.
  •  Dining: There is an on-site, self-service restaurant called Sea the Future that focuses on sustainable, organic, and seasonal ingredients. You’ll also find plenty of great dining options within walking distance in Parque das Nações.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Oceanário de Lisboa

Out of all the activities on our Lisbon itinerary, the aquarium was the clear standout for both kids and adults. The sheer variety of marine life and habitats kept everyone fully engaged from start to finish. Give your family plenty of unhurried time to wander the multi-level viewing areas and soak it all in.
