If you are planning a family trip to Switzerland, taking a scenic Lake Lucerne boat tour is an absolute must. We recently took the Küssnacht round-trip cruise, which lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes—a good length of time for kids to enjoy the alpine views without getting too restless. The route starts in the heart of Lucerne and takes you past picturesque countryside scenes, elegant lakeside villas, and the stunning Schloss Meggenhorn (Meggenhorn Castle). Along the way, you’ll also get sweeping views of iconic Swiss peaks, including Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi. To make the experience even more memorable, we opted for the historic paddle steamboat, which is available on select dates and times. Here is everything you need to know to plan your own family adventure on the water.
The Cruise Experience & Historic Paddle Steamboat
Our cruise departed right from the main Lucerne boat docks, specifically Pier 3, which sits directly across from the Lucerne main train station. While the standard modern motor vessels are excellent, we highly recommend booking your trip on one of the historic Lake Lucerne paddle steamboats if it fits your itinerary. We were lucky enough to board the “Unterwalden,” a beautifully restored steamboat that has been cruising the lake since 1902.
From the interior main deck, everyone on board can watch the massive engine churn and see the bright red paddles splashing in the water—a truly unique experience! For our adventure, we treated ourselves to first-class tickets, which gave us access to the quieter upper deck as well as the gorgeous, Rococo-style salon featuring rich wood paneling and green cushions. It felt like stepping back in time.
Family Tip: To find out exactly which days the historic steamboats are running, check the live timetable on the official Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (SGV) website before you go. They typically run on select Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the warmer months.
Keeping Kids Entertained
Right next to the ticket office, you can pick up a free “Niks Flaschenpost” (Nik’s Message in a Bottle) activity booklet. The booklet contains fun comics, coloring pages, and puzzles. Translating the German text is simple using a translation app on your phone. As a general rule for boat cruises, we also like to pack a few of our own small coloring books and travel games. The boat has plenty of tables, making it easy for the kids to play while the adults enjoy the panoramic mountain views.
Dining on Board: What Are the Options?
All the ships feature comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas equipped with tables. Because it was a beautiful sunny day, we chose to sit upstairs on the outdoor deck. Depending on which boat you board, you can order light food, snacks, and drinks directly from the friendly table-service staff. Our steamboat also featured a small kiosk where you can grab ice cream and cold drinks to enjoy on the deck benches.
Budget-Friendly Snack Tip: Onboard dining prices are a bit higher than average, which is standard for a Switzerland scenic cruise. If you are traveling with a big family and want to save some money, we recommend stopping by the Migros or Coop grocery stores inside the Lucerne main train station before you board. You can load up on affordable Swiss chocolates, pastries, and drinks to bring with you onto the ship.
Tickets and Practical Details
- Tickets: You can purchase your Lake Lucerne boat tickets online, at the Pier 1 ticket counter, or even directly on the ship. Discounts apply if you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, or a Junior Card for the kids.
- First Class vs. Second Class: First class gives you access to the quieter upper decks and historic salons. Second class covers the main deck, but still offers fantastic indoor and outdoor panoramic views.
- Stroller & Baby Friendliness: The ships are highly stroller-accessible with wide boarding ramps. Our boat came equipped with high chairs and a baby-changing table. Just keep in mind that you will have to navigate stairs if you book a first-class ticket to access the upper deck.
- Weather and Conditions Check: It’s worth checking SGV’s live webcam views and timetables before your trip to see the current lake conditions and weather.
- Arrival by Public Transit: Because the Lucerne boat docks are right across the street from the train station, taking the train is by far the easiest and most convenient option.
- By Car: If you are driving, the closest parking is the Bahnhofparking garage right under the station. However, traffic can get very congested in this area. We actually prefer to park a little farther away at Parkhaus Schweizerhof. It is an easy, scenic walk to the docks and gives you quick, direct access to Lucerne’s beautiful Old Town.
Our Final Thoughts
The Lake Lucerne Küssnacht Cruise is a fantastic, family-friendly excursion. It perfectly combines sightseeing with a relaxing break, allowing you to experience some of the best alpine scenery in central Switzerland without wearing out little legs.
