One of our favorite spring and summer traditions is visiting the self-pick flower fields in Switzerland. If you’re driving around and spot a sign reading “Blumen selber schneiden” or “Blumen selber pflücken,” it’s well worth pulling over to check it out. These unstaffed, honor-system fields let you cut your own fresh blooms, making it a budget-friendly and family-friendly activity. My kids love choosing their favorite blossoms—especially when Swiss sunflowers are in season—and helping to snip them into unique bouquets for our home or as gifts. Payment is simple: just check the clearly marked price list, drop cash into the honesty box, or scan the TWINT QR code. Most fields provide cutting knives and wrapping paper, making for a completely hassle-free experience.
Our go-to self-cut flower field in Zug is run by the Boog family. Located on Weststrasse right near the Zug Kantonsspital (just before you hit Südstrasse), this spot is a personal favorite because of the incredible variety and top-tier quality of their flowers. Even better, from Monday to Saturday during harvest season, they open a charming, strawberry-shaped farm stand right next to the field selling fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. It is a quick and fun family adventure, allowing you to pick up fresh produce and a hand-picked bouquet all in one stop.
