Kugelbahn Oberiberg: Swiss Marble Run Trail Guide

If your kids love marble runs as much as mine do, Kugelbahn Oberiberg needs to be on your family travel bucket list. This family-friendly hike in Switzerland perfectly combines a scenic walking trail with custom wooden marble runs and beautiful mountain views. What we love most about this specific trail is its accessibility. Unlike many alpine routes, it requires no cable car to reach, making it an easy, affordable day trip from Zurich, Zug, or Lucerne—all of which are under an hour’s drive away. You can find this hidden gem in Canton Schwyz, nestled right next to the beautiful Hoch-Ybrig alpine region.

Hiking Trail Overview: What to Expect

The Kugelbahn Oberiberg trail is a loop that spans roughly 4 km (2.5 miles). It typically takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete, depending on how often you stop to play and enjoy the scenery.

  • The Trail: The path consists of paved and gravel sections, making it relatively stroller-friendly, though you should still be prepared for a few uphill climbs.
  •  The Playground: Located just 5 minutes from the trailhead, this was a highlight for my daughter. The space features a couple of marble runs, a trampoline, a slide, a swing, and nice picnic areas.
  •  The Custom Marble Runs: The trail features a series of clever wooden structures. My son loved the racing course and the run fitted with traditional Swiss cowbells that ring aloud as the ball passes through.
  • Good to Know: The marble runs on this trail tend to be clustered together in groups of two or three stations, separated by longer walking stretches in between.
Helpful Tips for Your Visit
  • Bring or Buy Wooden Marbles: You will need wooden marbles to use the tracks. Visitors can bring their own standard wooden trail marbles (which we did), or purchase them at the start of the trail. The dispensing machines require two 2 CHF coins per ball, so make sure to carry exact change.
  • Navigate with the Outdooractive App: While there is local signage, we found that the trail isn’t very well-marked once you get into the town sections. The route is fully detailed on the Outdooractive app, which kept us on track. Because you’ll want to reference the map frequently, I highly recommend packing a portable battery pack for your phone.
  • Accessibility & Rest Stops: The trail features plenty of benches where you can stop for a rest and a quick snack. Since I am currently recovering from an injury, we really appreciated the flexibility of this route: halfway through, the path loops right back past the parking lot, making it incredibly easy to cut the hike in half if you need to.
Parking and Arrival Info
  •  By Car: Your destination is the paid parking lot called Parkplatz Roggen in Oberiberg.
  •  By Public Transit: If you prefer the train and bus, you can take public transportation directly to the “Oberiberg, Neuseewen” bus stop.
  • Kabi Bike Park: Right at the back of the parking lot, you’ll find the wooden marble vending machines and the Kabi Bike Park. The bike park features a “magic carpet” conveyor belt to take kids up a small hill, with several different tracks to ride back down to the finish line. It looked like an absolute blast!
Is Kugelbahn Oberiberg Worth It?

Our family had a wonderful day out at Kugelbahn Oberiberg. The variety of the marble runs kept the kids motivated to keep walking, and the playground was a great bonus. The ability to easily shorten the loop also made it a stress-free experience for my own physical recovery.
