Spetses Greece: A Family Travel Guide

Spetses is a stunning island in the Saronic Gulf, celebrated for its pine-covered landscapes, neoclassical architecture, and unique “car-free” charm. Whether you are planning a day trip from Athens or including it in a Peloponnese road trip, Spetses offers a perfect blend of elegance and family-friendly relaxation.

Arrival: How to Get to Spetses

Getting to Spetses is straightforward, making it one of the most accessible Greek islands for families.

  • From Athens: High-speed ferries depart from the Port of Piraeus. The journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, and tickets can be easily booked in advance via Ferryhopper.
  • From the Peloponnese: Our favorite way to visit is from Porto Cheli. Simply drive to the nearby Port of Kosta (about 8 minutes from Porto Cheli), where you’ll find a large paid parking lot with some shaded spots. From Kosta, a water taxi or local ferry will get you to Spetses in just 10 minutes.
Where to Stay

While Spetses is car-free, motorbikes and local taxis are permitted, which makes transporting luggage to your hotel much easier.

  • Spetses Town: Stay within walking distance of Dapia (the main port) to remain close to the best shops and family-friendly restaurants.
  • Porto Cheli: For families on a Greece road trip, we recommend staying in Porto Cheli. This allows you to keep your rental car for mainland exploration while taking easy day trips to Spetses and Hydra.
Things to Do in Spetses with Kids

The island is incredibly walkable, but the local transport options are part of the adventure.

  • Kaiki Beach Club: This organized beach is just a 20-minute walk (or a short taxi ride) from the main port. We recommend booking a shaded cabana online in advance. It is a pebble beach, so be sure to bring water shoes. The club offers excellent service, a full restaurant, and water sports like SUP, jet skiing, and flyboarding.
  • Horse-Drawn Carriages: For a classic Spetses experience, take a carriage ride from the new port to the Old Harbor. It is a magical way for children to see the island.
  • History & Walks: Walk the seaside path from Dapia to the Old Harbor (20–30 minutes) to see the old fortifications and cannons. Along the way, you will pass the Bouboulina Museum, which honors the island’s famous female naval commander.
  • Day Trip to Hydra: Use the local water taxis to visit neighboring Hydra, an island famous for having no motorized vehicles—only donkeys! For family friendly recommendations on Hydra, check out our family travel guide.
Where to Eat

Mourayo Bar Restaurant  is our top pick in the Old Harbor. Housed in a historic 19th-century building, it offers a beautiful shaded patio directly on the water. They specialize in fresh seafood but also serve excellent steaks, chicken, and pasta options for children. During the summer, make a reservation for sunset to enjoy the views and avoid the midday heat. The restaurant staff can also help coordinate your return transport via water taxi or carriage.

Final Thoughts

Spetses is a gem for families seeking a relaxed vibe without the logistical headaches of more remote islands. Between the family-friendly beach clubs and the charming Old Harbor, it is a guaranteed highlight of any Greek itinerary.
