If you are looking for a family-friendly getaway in Greece, look no further than the Mani Peninsula. This region offers a unique blend of rugged mountains and crystal-clear waters. The best part? You get the secluded feel of an island without needing a ferry. Located about a 3.5-hour drive from Athens—mostly via a well-paved toll road—it is easily accessible for families. The area is home to stunning spots like Kalogria Beach in Stoupa and incredible dining options such as Medikon in Agios Nikolaos. After multiple visits, our top recommendation for a vacation rental is Alassa Villas. Located just 5 minutes from Agios Nikolaos and 10 minutes from Stoupa, these modern stone family apartments sit directly by the sea and feature private swimming pools—perfect for a fun and relaxing seaside family vacation.
The Apartments: Traditional Mani Style Meets Modern Comfort
Alassa Villas consists of four apartments built in the traditional Mani stone style. They are perfectly equipped for large families:
- Layout: 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Sleeping Arrangements: The upper floor features two bedrooms with en suite showers. The king room offers a sea-facing balcony, while the second room has two single beds with mountain views.
- Sleep Quality: The beds are incredibly comfortable, and electric blinds ensure the rooms stay dark for naps or sleeping in.
- Ground Floor: Includes a third bedroom with a double bed (suitable for 1 adult or a child) and a full bathroom.
- Amenities: A modern kitchen (no dishwasher, but daily cleaning and dishwashing are provided), washing machine, baby cots, and high chairs.
- Welcoming Atmosphere: We were greeted with homemade sweet bread upon arrival—a perfect snack for the kids while we unpacked. The owners are incredibly kind and welcoming.
Outdoor Living and Water Activities
The outdoor space is where Alassa Villas truly shines. The private swimming pool was the highlight for our children. Note that there is no shallow end. In the evening, small lights at the bottom create a beautiful, star-like effect.
- Sea Access: The villas feature a shared seating area with loungers and umbrellas by the water.
- Adventure: Guests have access to stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. We loved exploring the coves and even kayaked to Pantazi Beach for lunch at Voulimeneas Restaurant.
- Tide Pools: The kids spent hours exploring the tide pools. Note that the shoreline is rocky, so beach shoes are a must.
- Sunsets: The sunsets from the villa are spectacular.
Premium Amenities
- Dining: You can order breakfast delivered to your door. They also provide menus from local restaurants that offer delivery—we enjoyed gyros by the pool while the kids swam.
- Gear: Both beach/pool and indoor towels are provided. There is also a selection of beach toys you can borrow for trips to Kalogria Beach.
- Wellness: A gym and sauna are available on-site.
- Parking: On-site parking makes exploring the peninsula easy.
Exploring Agios Dimitrios
A charming 5-minute walk from the villas brings you to the small village of Agios Dimitrios. It features a quaint fishing port and a small pebble beach. While the beach isn’t “organized” (no loungers for rent), it’s a lovely spot for kids to play. Stop by the seasonal café, Kafenio, for a local vibe.
Best Time to Visit the Mani Peninsula
Choosing the right time for your trip can shape your entire experience. The busiest months are July and August, when the area is lively but the heat can be intense. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, September is an ideal time to visit—the weather remains warm, and the summer crowds have mostly thinned out. If you are planning a trip during the shoulder seasons (May or October), be sure to check whether restaurants and cafés are open. While the Mani is more of a year-round destination than the smaller islands, some beachfront tavernas and seasonal spots may close starting in October.
Why You Should Visit
Alassa Villas is one of our favorite vacation rentals in Greece because it perfectly balances adventure and relaxation. Whether you are kayaking along the coastline, exploring tide pools, or simply lounging by the pool, it offers an ideal base for families. We have visited twice and would return in a heartbeat.
