If you’re planning a family getaway to the Mani Peninsula, Stoupa should be at the top of your list. Located about a 3.5-hour drive from Athens—mostly along a well-paved toll road—it’s an accessible and stunning destination. While there are many beautiful spots to choose from, Kalogria Beach is our absolute favorite. It’s especially family-friendly, with calm, shallow waters, soft sand, convenient sunbed rentals, and delicious food at a nearby restaurant.
Why Kalogria Beach Is Perfect for Kids
Kalogria Beach was formed by underground springs, which keep the water crystal clear. Here’s why our kids love it:
- Shallow waters: Gentle waves make it safe for little ones to splash and play.
- Soft sand: Perfect for building sandcastles. Most local rentals, like our favorite Alassa Villas, provide beach toys for guests.
- Cove exploration: At one end of the beach, you can rent paddleboards to explore shallow coves and caves tucked into the cliffs.
- Safety first: A lifeguard is on duty to ensure motorboats stay well away from the swimming area.
Tips for an Organized Beach Day
Kalogria is an “organized” beach, meaning most of the space is occupied by sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. There’s very little public space to set up your own gear, so we recommend renting. We prefer to rent sunbeds from the Kalogria Restaurant.
- Reservations: During peak summer months, call ahead to reserve sunbeds or arrive before 10:00 AM.
- Amenities: Free showers are available near the street to rinse off salt and sand before heading home.
- Beach service: You can order drinks, sandwiches, and burgers directly to your sunbed.
- What to bring: While umbrellas are included with your rental, don’t forget towels, sunscreen, and beach toys.
Dining at Kalogria Restaurant
While the snack service at the sunbeds is convenient, we highly recommend sitting down for lunch at Kalogria Restaurant—one of the best in the area. There’s a large shaded outdoor patio with beautiful water views.
- The food: They serve excellent Greek cuisine. Our top picks are the fresh fish, tyrokafteri (spicy feta dip), souvlaki, and fresh salads. For kids, they offer a great “toast” (grilled cheese).
- Family facilities: The restaurant is very accommodating, with high chairs and baby changing tables available.
- The owners: The family that runs the restaurant also manages the beach beds and nearby rental apartments. While we haven’t stayed there ourselves, the location is excellent, the apartments look modern, and we’ve consistently received outstanding service from the owners. It’s definitely worth considering as a place to stay.
Logistics: Parking and Arrival
Avoid driving down to beach level—the road is narrow, and turning around can be difficult.
- Use the lot: Park at “Ιδιωτικό Πάρκινγκ Καλόγριας” (Kalogria Private Parking) at the top of the hill and walk down. They accept both cash and credit cards.
- Street parking: Free street parking is available, but the area becomes very congested by midday, making it difficult to leave later.
- Our routine: We like to arrive early, enjoy the beach, then head back to our villa in the early afternoon for a pool swim and a nap before going out for a sunset dinner. Beaches get more crowded in the afternoon, and the mornings are quieter.
Final Thoughts
Kalogria Beach offers the perfect mix of natural beauty and convenience. Whether you’re paddling through cliffside caves or enjoying a fresh Greek salad while the kids play in the sand, it’s a destination that makes a Mediterranean vacation feel effortless.
