Visiting Technorama: Interactive Science Museum Near Zurich for Families

The Swiss Science Center Technorama is an amazing museum to explore with the family. Located in Winterthur, just 30 minutes from Zurich, it’s a great destination for rainy days or for curious kids who love hands-on learning. This large science center spans three floors with over 500 interactive experiments designed to spark creativity and curiosity. Plan for a full or half day—there’s so much to see that one visit is hardly enough.

Interactive Exhibits and Experiments

Technorama is divided into themed areas covering topics such as electricity, water, illusions, sound, light, magnets, and mechanics. Each experiment station encourages visitors to explore science through play. Our kids especially loved how interactive each setup was. Every station includes multilingual cards in German, French, English, and Italian—the front explains what to do, while the back breaks down the science behind it.

Lab Courses and Science Shows

In addition to the exhibits, Technorama offers lab workshops in chemistry, physics, and biology lasting anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours. Some labs require an extra fee, so it’s best to book in advance. These workshops are conducted in German, though English versions are available for groups with prior arrangements.

We didn’t attend a full lab course but visited the open biology lab, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our day. Several stations were set up with detailed instructions in multiple languages. The kids had the chance to prepare glass slides and observe microscopic organisms under a microscope. They also examined various samples—including insects, shells, and plant fibers—on large, easy-to-view screens. Older children will find additional, more advanced experiments to try. Technorama also hosts live shows on topics like oxygen, lasers, and electricity—check the schedule at the entrance for times and language options.

Family-Friendly Dining Options

Near the entrance, there’s a self-service restaurant offering schnitzel, sausages, pasta, snacks, and drinks. Family meal deals include a main course, drink, and ice cream. The restaurant is child-friendly, featuring high chairs and a small play area with building blocks to keep young children entertained while waiting.

Visit Tips for Families

Make the most of your visit with these practical tips:

  • Bring your own lunch—tables and chairs are available in the atrium near the entrance for picnics.
  • Use lockers for belongings—lockers and coat racks are located at the entrance (lockers require a 2 CHF coin).
  • Visit the gift shop—pick up science-themed souvenirs or educational toys near the entrance.
  • Stroller and baby friendly—the museum has elevators and baby-changing tables.
  • Dress children in bright colors—some exhibit rooms are dimly lit, making it easier to keep track of them.
  • Arrive early on weekends—it gets busy; start exploring from the top floor, which is usually less crowded.
  • Take your time—let the kids explore freely; it’s nearly impossible to see everything in one visit.
Tickets and Getting There

Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance. Prices are on the higher side, but the experience is well worth it for families. Children under five enter free, and family discounts are available. We used the Swiss Coupon Pass 2-for-1 offer, which provided excellent value. If you’re arriving by car, there’s a paid parking lot right in front of the building. When traveling by public transport, check out the “Explore’n’Rail Technorama” package, which offers 20% or more off admission. From Oberwinterthur Station, it’s a short 10-minute walk to the museum. Alternatively, take Bus No. 5 from Winterthur Main Station directly to Technorama. Visit the official Technorama website for up-to-date ticket prices and scheduling details.

Our family was truly impressed by this interactive, educational, and fun science center. The kids especially loved the hands-on experiments and open lab stations.
