Descanso Gardens features many lovely walking paths, making it a wonderful place to unwind in nature. Visitors can stroll up to the Boddy House Museum, once home to Elias Boddy, who purchased the property in 1937 and helped shape it into the gardens we know today before selling it to Los Angeles County in 1953. Our children’s favorite spots include the main lawn—perfect for running between the glasshouses—and the small hedge maze in the rose garden. They also loved exploring the ponds and streams in search of ducks and turtles. The grounds are stroller-friendly, so even younger children can join the adventure comfortably.
The Miniature Trains
The miniature train exhibit is always a highlight for families. Multiple trains run on tracks at various levels, weaving through tunnels, bridges, and themed displays. This year’s setup features a charming agricultural theme with barns and tiny crops. Our kids could have easily spent hours watching the trains chug along. Kids can choose from a children’s menu of favorites like quesadillas, chicken nuggets, and pasta, complete with paper menus and crayons for coloring—a thoughtful touch. We ordered pizzas, salads, and burgers, all fresh and delicious. While prices are on the higher side, the quality, service, and generous portions make it worthwhile. Enchanted: Forest of Light
From mid-November to early January, Descanso Gardens transforms after dark with Enchanted: Forest of Light, a spectacular nighttime event featuring creative light installations and interactive displays. Families can grab snacks or drinks from food stands along the trail while taking in the illuminated exhibits. Our kids especially loved the twinkling lights of the Starlight Garden, the towering trees in the Ancient Forest, and the immersive Symphony of Oaks display.
Amenities and Parking
Tickets for entry and train rides can be purchased at the main entrance or online. Children aged two and under are free, and discounted rates are available for kids ages three to twelve. Near the entrance, you’ll also find Jones Coffee Roasters serving pastries and drinks, as well as The Market, a casual self-service restaurant. The gift shop is worth a browse for garden-themed gifts or souvenirs. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food for a picnic, and there’s a large free parking lot directly in front of the entrance.
