The Illuminarium Zurich is a magical Christmas experience in the city. Located in the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum), this Zurich Christmas market is known for its unique light displays. The event usually opens in November and runs through Christmas. Our family loves walking through the glowing lights, watching the animated projection show, and grabbing a warm snack from the food stalls.
The Market Area
The courtyard entrance is free and takes you right into a world of lights and winter charm. The kids were thrilled to meet some of the funny characters from the light show who wander through the market area. Food and drink stalls serve everything from hot chocolate and mulled wine to sweet treats and savory snacks, and there are a few tables to sit and enjoy the festive surroundings. Several fire pits are available to warm your hands between bites. For families wanting a sit-down meal, the fondue chalet is a lovely option—you can book a table online in advance. The area is mostly stroller-friendly, which makes it easy for families with small children. Make sure to dress warm.
The Light Show
Beyond the market, the Illuminarium Yuki light show is a fun family activity. This is a paid part of the event, and tickets can be purchased online. The light show lasts about 25 minutes and takes place in a separate section of the courtyard, where colorful projections dance across the museum walls in an immersive display of music and animation. Our children loved the vibrant colors and enjoyed dancing along to the music. Every spot in the courtyard offers a good view, so there’s no worry about missing anything.
Tickets and Getting There
Admission to the market area is free, and only the light show requires a ticket. Lines to enter the market can form during peak hours, but there’s a separate (and often shorter) line for show ticket holders. The Landesmuseum is located right next to Zurich Main Train Station (Zurich HB), making it easily accessible by public transport.
Other Christmas Activities within Walking Distance
A visit to the Illuminarium pairs perfectly with a quick stop at the Zurich Main Station Christmas Market (Christkindlimarkt), located just across the street inside the train station. There you’ll find more food stalls, local crafts, and a spectacular Christmas tree. If you have extra time, stroll five minutes down Bahnhofstrasse to see the famous Zurich Luci Lights and then continue to the Singing Christmas Tree at Werdmühleplatz. Families can enjoy live carol performances and stop by the nearby restaurant Black Tap for burgers and milkshakes to warm up. All of these attractions are easily reachable with a stroller. We always enjoy visiting the Illuminarium in Zurich for its magical lights and festive atmosphere. The combination of the free market, interactive characters, and family-friendly light show makes it one of the best Christmas activities in Zurich. With nearby markets and Christmas music just steps away, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the season with the whole family.
