After finding Gelati Altstadt in Lucerne’s Old Town, we learned that it belongs to a small chain of gelato shops that first opened in 1998. The gelato was so delicious that we made a special stop at Gelati Niederdorf in Zurich’s Old Town. Just like in Lucerne, kids can choose an animal figure to top their gelato, which always brings huge smiles. The gelato is creamy, flavorful, and surprisingly affordable by Swiss standards at just 3.50 CHF per scoop. While there isn’t outdoor seating, the shop’s location near the Limmat River and Rathausbrücke makes it perfect for a family stroll. From late August to mid-October, you can also catch the historic carousel “Rösslirytschuel” right on the Rathaus Bridge. Whether in Zurich or Lucerne, Gelati 1998 is a family-friendly gelato stop in Switzerland that combines great flavors, fun touches for kids, and charming historic surroundings.
