Family Day Out at Modelleisenbahn-Club Einsiedeln: Miniature Trains Near Zurich

The Modelleisenbahn-Club Einsiedeln (MECE) is a hidden gem in the Swiss countryside, just 40 minutes south of Zurich. Founded in 1985 by railway enthusiasts, this garden railway is a dream destination for families and train lovers alike. Open from May through October, typically on the first Sunday of the month (weather permitting), it makes for a fun seasonal outing with kids. Be sure to check the official website to confirm dates before heading out. We visited on a sunny Sunday and spent about two hours enjoying the model trains.

What to Expect at MECE

The garden railway in Einsiedeln is much larger than expected, stretching nearly 2 km with around 20 different trains. At the three-lane station, families can wait their turn to board. With up to six trains running at once, the line moves quickly, and kids can enjoy several rides without long waits. Each ride lasts about 10 minutes and winds past bridges, tunnels, switches, and charming details such as flowers and miniature buildings. Donations to support this community club are appreciated and can be given via TWINT or in the collection boxes placed around the yard.

Food and Refreshments

There’s no need to pack lunch, as the Modelleisenbahn-Club Einsiedeln also offers food. During our visit, sausages, chicken nuggets, and fries were on the menu, along with snacks, soft drinks, and local beer. Shaded tables under trees and umbrellas provide a perfect view of the tracks, so parents can relax with a meal while children watch the trains pass by. Payments were accepted in cash or via TWINT; credit cards may also be possible, but it’s best to bring cash just in case.

Things to Do Nearby

A visit here pairs perfectly with a stop at Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln, just a five-minute walk from the train area. This restaurant is known for Swiss specialties like fondue and raclette, and it also serves excellent ice cream—the perfect treat after a ride. We even bought raclette cheese to take home, which turned out to be the best we’ve ever had. For a cultural highlight, consider visiting Einsiedeln Abbey, a short walk away, with its historic church and expansive monastery grounds. If visiting by car, the easiest option is to park at Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln or across the street at Landi, as there is no parking directly at the club. By public transport, take the train to Einsiedeln station and enjoy a 15-minute walk, or hop off at the nearest bus stop, Einsiedeln Alpstrasse. The paths and event area are stroller-friendly, making this a stress-free outing even with younger children. With easy access, MECE is a perfect day trip from Zurich with kids.

Final Thoughts

We were amazed at the scale of the tracks and the variety of locomotives at the Modelleisenbahn-Club Einsiedeln. Our kids loved riding the trains, watching them crisscross over bridges and through tunnels, and seeing each unique model up close. This outing is relaxed, affordable, and full of charm—one of the best options for a budget-friendly family day trip in Switzerland.
