If you’re planning a family trip to Lake Como, Villa Melzi in Bellagio is a must-see destination. This beautiful property sits right on the lake, surrounded by lush gardens and offering some of the most breathtaking views in the region. With its serene atmosphere and easy walking paths, Villa Melzi is perfect for families looking to spend one to two hours soaking in the beauty and history of Bellagio.

The Rich History Behind Villa Melzi
Villa Melzi’s story dates back to the early 1800s when it was built by Francesco Melzi d’Eril. As the vice president of the Italian Republic established by Napoleon, Melzi d’Eril wanted a grand lakeside retreat. While the villa itself is not open to the public, the gardens are, and they offer a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of this historic estate.

Exploring the Stunning Botanical Gardens
The gardens are truly the highlight of any visit to Villa Melzi. Strolling through the extensive botanical park, we marveled at the variety of exotic and rare plants. Our family favorites included the peaceful Japanese-style pond, the vibrant water lily pond, and the towering trees that provide shade along many of the paths. There are plenty of benches with stunning views of Lake Como—perfect for a family snack break. The kids loved having space to explore, though it’s important to remember that walking on the grass isn’t allowed. Don’t miss the cave near the Bellagio entrance; it’s a fun spot for kids to discover. After asking the staff, we left our stroller at the entrance for easier exploring, but you could bring one and stick to the main paths if needed.

Arrival Tips and Navigating the Villa Melzi Experience
Getting to Villa Melzi is easy and convenient. Tickets can be bought online or right at the entrance (we’ve always found it simple to purchase them on arrival). There are two entrances: the north entrance is closest to Bellagio, which is where we started our visit. After wandering the gardens, we exited at the south entrance and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Ristorante Alle Darsene di Loppia, a lovely spot overlooking a small port. With our tickets, we were able to re-enter the gardens and make our way back to the north entrance. Since parking in Bellagio is very limited, we recommend arriving by ferry. From the ferry station, it’s a scenic 10-minute walk along a flower-lined lakeside promenade to the north entrance.
