Nestled just north of Lucerne, Switzerland, Chärnsmatt Gasthof & Spielparadies is a family-friendly destination that has a restaurant, mini-train rides, and playground. Our recent visit was centered around the miniature railway, which has been transporting visitors since its opening in 1980.
The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the charming steam engine trains that take guests through tunnels, bridges, and scenic landscapes. The railway track winds throughout the play area. Tickets can be purchased next to the train station, and the service operates based on demand, so be sure to check the website for opening times.
After our train ride, the kids eagerly explored the playground. With large slides, a zip line, swings, and forts to climb, there was much to explore. From the playground, the family can watch the miniature trains travel on the track.
We made reservations for lunch at the on-site restaurant, which is incredibly accommodating for families. Our table was set with children’s menus featuring coloring activities, making it a fun dining experience. We had a nice meal in a large dining room where many other families were enjoying lunch.
We learned that during the holiday season, special train rides will be available. The Polar Express will run from 4-6 PM on select dates in late November and December. We hope to visit during the holidays to see how Chärnsmatt transforms into a winter wonderland.
Parking is available at a fee both at the restaurant and across the street. If you dine at the restaurant, remember to ask your waitress for validation of your parking ticket. Chärnsmatt is not just a destination; it’s an experience that brings enjoyment for the whole family.
