Discover Zug’s Old Town: A 1.5-Hour Guided Tour of Historic Landmarks and Hidden Stories

The 1.5-hour guided tour of Zug’s Old Town, offered by Zug Tourismus, is a fascinating way to explore the picturesque historic center of Zug. The tour takes you through narrow alleys, colorful facades, and notable landmarks such as the distinctive Zytturm clock tower, the Town Hall, and Lake Zug.

During the tour, you will learn about the main historical events, highlights, and disasters that shaped the city. The guide shares many surprising stories and insights into the turbulent history behind the idyllic appearance of this lakeside town. The tour begins at the Clock Tower (Zytturm), home to the oldest bell still in use, dating back to 1391. We learned about the astronomical clock, including how it indicates the phases of the moon. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enter the tower as it is currently undergoing renovations. We were fortunate to visit the Town Hall, built during the Middle Ages and still serving as Zug’s administrative center today.

The tour is available year-round, suitable for individuals or groups of up to 25 people, and conducted in German and English. It is excellent and family-friendly. The guide patiently answered children’s questions and kept them engaged throughout. The tour costs only 5 CHF and meets in front of the Zug clock tower. Payment must be made in cash.

The Zug clock tower (Zytturm) is easily accessibly by public transit, and only a 10 minute walk from the Zug main train station. By car, Parkhaus Postplatz is close to the beginning of the tour. After the tour, Più Postplatz is a family-friendly Italian Restaurant that offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Click here for more information.
