Family Fun at Wirzweli Mountain: Hiking, Tobogganing & Witch Trail

Wirzweli Mountain near Lucerne is a magical family destination, especially around Halloween. Known for its witch-themed activities, kid-friendly hiking trails, summer toboggan run, and enchanting playgrounds, Wirzweli offers endless opportunities for fun and exploration. This family-friendly mountain guarantees a full day of adventure in the Swiss Alps.

Cable Car to Adventure

Your journey to Wirzweli Mountain begins at the Dallenwil cable car station, located about 20 minutes south of Lucerne. A large paid parking lot is available, though it can fill quickly on sunny weekends. Travelers arriving by train can take advantage of the free shuttle from Dallenwil train station to the cable car station (check the website for phone numbers and details). The scenic double cable car ride offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains before arriving at the Wirzweli station. Be sure to check the official website for current operating hours, the live webcam for mountain conditions, and seasonal activities. Don’t forget your Half Fare Card and Junior Cards for discounts.

A Playground of Fun

At the mountain station, families are welcomed by a bunny enclosure and a large witch-themed playground. The playground has two sections: a quieter area for younger children and a more adventurous space with climbing towers, slides, rope bridges, and water play features for older kids. By the afternoon, the playground is alive with children playing, climbing, and exploring. Picnic areas make it easy for families to relax and enjoy their meals outdoors. For even more fun, pony rides are available from 2–4 pm on fair-weather days. We skipped them this time since our little ones were already tired, but it’s an activity we’ll try on our next visit.

Toboggan Run Thrills

Next to the playground, the Wirzweli summer toboggan run offers pure excitement. The 535-meter track may be shorter than the one at Pilatus, but it still delivers plenty of thrills. My son raced down again and again. Tickets are sold directly at the toboggan entrance beside the playground.

The Witch Trail (Hexenweg)

One of the highlights of a family trip to Wirzweli is the Witch Trail (Hexenweg). To reach the trailhead, follow signs to the smaller cable car that takes you up to Gummenalp. Since this lift only holds six people at a time, we recommend starting your day here to avoid long waits. Tickets must be paid in cash at the Gummenalp top station. The Hexenweg is a 3.2 km, mostly downhill hike, suitable for children aged four and up (but not stroller-friendly). Along the way, benches offer convenient snack stops while you enjoy panoramic mountain views. Kids will love the interactive witch-themed stations, like the broomstick zip line, spider webs, and Lizi’s little house. At the end, children can even collect a colorful “magic stone” as a souvenir of their adventure. This trail is particularly special in autumn and makes for an unforgettable family Halloween outing. It took our family 1.5 hours to complete the trail. For more detailed information on this hike, click here.

The Owl Path (Eulenpfad)

Once you complete the Hexenweg, take a short detour onto the Owl Path (Eulenpfad). This 15–20 minute loop showcases wooden owl carvings and offers the chance to spot real owls in the forest. My son found this trail fascinating.

Dining with a View

Gasthaus Restaurant Waldegg

Just before the Owl Path entrance, you’ll find Gasthaus Restaurant Waldegg, a family-friendly spot perfect for lunch. The restaurant features a children’s menu, high chairs, a baby changing station, and a playground so parents can relax while kids continue to play. With both indoor seating and a sunny terrace overlooking the mountains, it’s an ideal place to recharge during your day out.

Berggasthaus Gummenalp

At the top station, Gummenalp, you’ll find Berggasthaus Gummenalp—a cozy mountain restaurant with a terrace overlooking the valley and a small playground for kids. On cooler days, indoor seating makes it a comfortable stop. The restaurant serves classic Swiss dishes, including schnitzel, rösti, and items from a kids’ menu. Our kids loved their animal-shaped chicken nuggets, while I enjoyed a delicious schnitzel. Service was friendly, the food excellent, and the prices comparable to other alpine restaurants. It’s a great place to rest, refuel, or simply enjoy a drink before starting the Witch Trail (Hexenweg) hike.

Conclusion

Wirzweli Mountain is one of the best family day trips from Lucerne. Between the witch-themed playground, toboggan run, Hexenweg, and kid-friendly amenities, it’s a destination full of family fun—with better prices and fewer tourist crowds than the popular neighboring mountains of Pilatus and Rigi.
