Nestled on a peninsula jutting into Lake Como, Villa Balbianello is a dreamlike destination perfect for families and movie fans alike. We spent about two hours wandering its spectacular gardens, soaking in panoramic lake views and letting the kids explore the winding paths and secret corners. The villa’s manicured lawns and iconic loggia (covered corridors) make it one of the most photogenic spots on the lake.

History and Movie Magic
Villa Balbianello’s story begins in 1787, built by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini atop a former Franciscan monastery. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of noble families and explorers, each leaving their mark on the villa and its gardens. As a Star Wars fan, visiting was a thrill-key scenes from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones were filmed here, with the villa transformed into the romantic lakeside retreat on Naboo where Anakin and Padmé fall in love. The villa also starred in Casino Royale, where James Bond recovers after his Venetian adventure, making it a must-see for film buffs.

Tickets and Accessibility
You can choose between a garden-only ticket or a guided tour that lets you see inside the villa (which we skipped so the kids could roam freely). Booking ahead is highly recommended, especially in peak season, as tickets often sell out. There’s a family ticket option for two adults and two children, and children under 5 enter free. Note that the gravel paths and stairs make strollers tricky-pack a carrier if you have little ones.

Getting There
Accessing the villa is part of the adventure. You can’t drive directly to the entrance; instead, park in Lenno (parking can be a challenge) and either walk 20–30 minutes up a scenic, slightly inclined path or catch a water taxi from Lido di Lenno. On windy days, water taxis may not run, so check ahead. Private taxis from your accommodation are another option for a smoother trip.

Lunch at Grand Hotel Tremezzo
After exploring the stunning Villa Balbianello, we recommend heading just 5 minutes by car (6 minutes by bus) to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo for a delightful lunch. We enjoyed a lovely meal poolside at T Pizza. The restaurant offers alfresco seating in the shade of beautiful gardens, providing a safe and charming space for kids to explore. Make sure to call ahead to make a reservation. For more information, click here.
