Visit the Aare Gorge, Switzerland: Family Tips for a Natural Wonder

The Aareschlucht, or Aare Gorge, is a stunning natural wonder located in the Bernese Oberland near Meiringen. This 1.6-kilometer-long narrow gorge offers an incredible family adventure. You can explore it easily on the elevated walkways built right into the rock walls. It’s a fantastic option for any weather, especially on cloudy days. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the walk.

History of the Aare Gorge

The Aare Gorge was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Meltwater repeatedly cut through the hard limestone over time, creating the deep gorge you see now. The pale limestone walls contrast beautifully with the turquoise-blue water, colored by glacial sediment.

Visitor Information and Family Tips

The Aareschlucht has two entry points: the west entrance and the east entrance. We recommend starting at the west entrance, which is best for families, featuring a large playground, self-service restaurant, and gift shop with an outdoor terrace.

  • Tickets are available at both entrances. Always check the official website for current operating hours and dates.
  • The path is mostly an elevated walkway, but it can be narrow (1–2 meters wide).
  • Stroller Warning: The first half of the path is generally stroller-friendly, but the trail becomes unpaved and uneven halfway through. A hiking backpack is better for younger children. Navigating a stroller can also be tricky due to two-way traffic in the narrow passages.
  • Kid Fun: Children love searching for the hidden “Tatzelwurm” dragon figures along the path—it makes the walk a fun scavenger hunt!
Practical Details and Getting There
  • Parking: A large parking lot is available at the west entrance. Note that parking availability may be busier during peak season.

  • Exiting: If you walk the entire gorge from west to east, you have a few options for the return: take a bus or train (check the SBB app for schedules) or simply walk back the way you came. The east entrance has a small kiosk and restrooms.

  • Location: The gorge is a great detour if you are driving between Lucerne and Interlaken.
