Nestled in the Bernese Oberland near Meiringen, the Aareschlucht (Aare Gorge) is a breathtaking natural wonder and a perfect destination for a family outing. This narrow, dramatic gorge stretches for 1.6 kilometers and can be explored in about 1 to 1.5 hours. Elevated walkways cling to the sheer rock walls, offering spectacular views of the icy blue river rushing below. The gorge is stunning and makes a great option—especially on cloudy days when the mountain views are less impressive.

The History and Formation of the Gorge
The Aare Gorge was carved by glaciers during the last ice age. As glaciers advanced and receded, meltwater repeatedly cut through the hard limestone, creating the gorge we see today. The turquoise-blue water, colored by glacial sediment, contrasts beautifully with the pale limestone walls.

Visiting the Gorge: Family Tips
Aareschlucht has two entrances: west and east. We started at the west entrance, which features a large playground for kids and a self-service restaurant—perfect for a pre- or post-hike treat. Tickets are available here. The path through the gorge is mostly an elevated walkway, sometimes narrowing to just 1–2 meters wide. While the first half is stroller-friendly, the trail becomes uneven and unpaved about halfway through, so a hiking backpack is better for little ones. Additionally, since the narrow trail is used by people in both directions, passing groups can be tricky with a stroller. Our kids enjoyed spotting the hidden “dragon” figures (the Tatzelwurm family) along the way, turning the walk into a fun scavenger hunt.

Getting There and Practical Details
A large parking lot at the west entrance made arrival for our group quite easy, but we visited in the quieter fall season. After walking from west to east, you can take a bus or train back (check the SBB app for schedules), or simply return the same way. The east entrance offers a small kiosk and restrooms for a quick break before heading back. We visited Aareschlucht as a short detour on our drive from Lucerne to Interlaken—highly recommended if you’re exploring the region. For more recommendations in the region, click here.
