Tucked away in Zurich’s Seefeld district, Villa Patumbah is a striking example of 19th-century grandeur and architectural eclecticism. Located just a short distance from the city center, the villa and its surrounding gardens offer a tranquil escape from Zurich’s urban bustle.

A Glimpse into History
Constructed between 1883 and 1885, Villa Patumbah was commissioned by Karl Fürchtegott Grob, a prosperous merchant who amassed his fortune through a tobacco plantation in Sumatra. The villa’s name, “Patumbah,” translates to “a place you like to be” in Indonesian, reflecting Grob’s time in Sumatra. Designed by Swiss architects Alfred Chiodera and Theophil Tschudi, the villa blends various architectural styles, including Italian Renaissance, Rococo, Swiss Chalet, and Southeast Asian folk art. In the 1970s, the villa narrowly escaped demolition but was saved by the Preservation Society. Today, visitors can tour this unique landmark. Admission costs CHF 10 for adults, CHF 5 for children (up to 16 years), and CHF 25 for families. Zürich Card holders enjoy free entry.

The Glass Dome
One of the villa’s most captivating features is its Asian-inspired glass dome, located in the private living quarters on the top floor. Visitors can admire this stunning work of art through a porthole on the main floor. While standard tours do not include access to the private quarters, you can ask a docent if they are available to guide you upstairs for a closer look.

The Gardens
Designed in 1890 by landscape architect Evariste Mertens, the gardens reflect the style of an English garden. Highlights include a fountain adorned with clam shells from the Indo-Pacific Ocean, an Alpengarten showcasing Swiss mountain flora, rose bushes, tobacco plants, and a charming glass-and-cast-iron pavilion. Entrance to the gardens is free. While touring the villa may not be ideal for families with small children due to the lack of interactive exhibits, the gardens provide ample space for kids to explore and play.
