Viehausstellung (Livestock Show)

We attended our first Viehausstellung (livestock show) in the picturesque city of Einsiedeln, a place steeped in history and charm, primarily known for its stunning Benedictine Abbey that dates back to the 10th century. This event was not just a showcase of local agriculture but a vibrant celebration of community and tradition.

At the Viehausstellung, local farmers proudly presented their cows, sheep, and goats, each vying for the coveted red ribbon prize awarded to the top animal. Families and friends gathered to support their favorite livestock. We wandered through the bustling grounds, admiring the impressive animals. The main ring was where all the action happened, with judging taking place. It was fascinating to see how much effort goes into preparing these animals for competition.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was the grand parade that followed the judging. The decorated animals were led through the streets of Einsiedeln, adorned with colorful ribbons and bells that jingled beautifully as they walked. To our delight, a local band accompanied the parade, playing lively tunes that added to the festive atmosphere. The combination of music, laughter, and the sight of these magnificent animals parading through town created an unforgettable experience.

Combine this experience with a trip to view the impressive Abbey which was renovated in the 1735 in the baroque style. The inside of the church is breathtaking. The town next to the church is very charming, and we enjoyed having lunch at Restaurant Bären which is also a bakery.

The Viehausstellung is a cherished autumn tradition in Switzerland, taking place in various towns from September to October. It’s a wonderful way to connect with local culture and witness firsthand the dedication of farmers who contribute to Switzerland’s rich agricultural heritage. If you ever find yourself in Switzerland during this time of year, I highly recommend attending a Viehausstellung—it’s an experience that beautifully showcases community spirit and tradition!
