Hoch Ybrig is a wonderful winter Alpine destination just 30–40 minutes from either Zurich or Lucerne. The mountain offers winter sports such as skiing, tobogganing, and hiking. It’s the perfect place for a half-day or a full day of winter fun, surrounded by snowy peaks and stunning views.

Skiing at Hoch Ybrig
Hoch Ybrig offers a variety of ski runs for different skill levels, along with fun parks for those interested in jumps and tricks. Just a short distance from the Seebli cable car station, there’s a convenient beginner area with magic carpets, ideal for families or those learning to ski. We spent an afternoon skiing without the kids, joined by friends familiar with the mountain. After exiting the cable car, we skied toward the lake to take the D chairlift (Sesselbahn Spirstock) to the top, where breathtaking panoramic views awaited. We then took the easy run 7 (Nätachboden) back down, which proved steeper and more challenging than expected. We took it slow, soaking in the scenery and enjoying the fresh snow

While Hoch Ybrig’s runs are well-maintained and scenic, even the easier slopes can be challenging for beginners. Lift tickets are reasonably priced, with discounts available after 12:30 pm, and ski rentals are conveniently located at Stöckli, right at the top of the Seebli cable car station. Additionally, there’s a smaller ski zone about a 10-minute drive from the cable car. This area, Oberiberg, offers easier runs and operates depending on snow conditions. It was recommended to us for beginners, though we have not visited yet. You can purchase a ski pass specifically for this area, making it an affordable option for newcomers. Hoch Ybrig’s proximity and fair prices make it appealing for experienced skiers, though it is not the easiest choice for those just starting out.

Winter Hiking in Hoch Ybrig
Hoch Ybrig isn’t just about skiing—it also offers a great selection of winter hiking trails. One of the most accessible is the Seebli Winter Walk, which begins right at the cable car station. Simply follow the purple signs to the loop trail around the lake. This pleasant path features gentle inclines and lovely winter views of the surrounding peaks even on a cloudy day. It takes about 40 to 60 minutes to complete and is perfect for families looking for a calm snow walk. While the trail is not stroller-friendly, a carrier backpack works well for small children. The peaceful setting makes it a relaxing winter escape for families who prefer exploring on foot.

Arrival and Tickets
Hoch Ybrig is a large area, and not all parts are connected. For the main cable car at Weglosen, both outdoor and indoor parking are available. From there, you take the cable car from Weglosen to Seebli, which serves as the main access point to the mountain. Ticket prices are straightforward—no discounts apply for Half-Fare Cards, Junior Cards, or Swiss Travel Passes. However, reduced rates are available after 12:30 pm, and family passes can be purchased directly at the cable car station.

Final Thoughts
Hoch Ybrig is a stunning winter destination offering skiing, hiking, and plenty of Alpine charm—all within easy reach of Zurich and Lucerne. The slopes can be more challenging, so beginners should proceed with caution or consider nearby ski resorts such as Melchsee-Frutt, which offers a large beginner-friendly area perfect for kids. We plan to try the Oberiberg beginner zone next time, as it’s close to parking and easier to navigate with children. With its scenic views, snowy trails, and short drive from major Swiss cities, Hoch Ybrig is a lovely choice for a quick winter getaway in the Swiss Alps.
