Our family, together with another, joined an igloo construction course at Iglu-Dorf Davos Klosters. The activity takes place high in the Swiss Alps at 2,570 meters and offers a fun, hands-on experience in the snow. Over the course of one hour, our group learned how to build a traditional igloo while spending quality time together as a family.
The Igloo-Building Adventure
Guided by an experienced instructor, we learned to measure and cut ice blocks using saws. The instructor demonstrated how to use a chainsaw to shape the larger blocks, which were then transported on sleds to our building site. The kids loved being part of the process—especially my daughter, who laughed as she was pulled on the sled with the ice blocks. My son even got creative and built a small mailbox for our igloo. Although we didn’t finish within the one-hour session, the instructor kindly extended our time so we could complete it. The experience was unforgettable and a true highlight of our family winter trip to Davos Klosters. Be sure to dress warmly and wear waterproof gloves and boots. Courses can be booked online through Iglu-Dorf.
Lunch in the Igloo Restaurant
After building our ice shelter, we rewarded ourselves with a delicious fondue lunch inside the Iglu-Dorf restaurant. Dining inside an igloo surrounded by glowing ice walls was a magical experience. Families can also choose from kid-friendly meals such as pasta dishes. Reservations are required, as the restaurant is part of the Iglu-Dorf hotel. After lunch, we explored the hotel area and admired beautiful snow and ice sculptures in the rooms. Although we didn’t stay overnight, the fondue lunch made for a perfect winter treat. Don’t forget to bundle up—it’s chilly inside!
Getting There
To reach Iglu-Dorf, take two funiculars from Davos Dorf—first to Mittelstation, then up to Weissfluhjoch. From there, it’s about a 15–20-minute walk following the signs to Iglu-Dorf Davos Klosters. Note that sleds aren’t allowed on the trail, so carrying or walking with small children might take extra time. The return journey includes a steep incline, so plan ahead to catch the last funicular down. We recommend making a stop at the Panorama Bar at the Weissfluhjoch station for amazing views and a snack. It’s a truly memorable family activity in the Swiss Alps that combines creativity, learning, and winter fun.
