Klewenalp-Stockhütte is a lovely mountain to visit in winter. Located only 20 minutes from Lucerne, this mountain offers many family-friendly activities, including skiing, sledding, winter hiking, and snowshoeing. The winter season typically runs from December to March (check the website for specific dates). Plan for a half-day to a full-day visit, depending on which family activities you choose.

Overview of the Alpine Area
Klewenalp-Stockhütte covers a large alpine area. You can reach the mountain either by taking the cable car from Beckenried to Klewenalp (1,593 m) or the gondola from Emmetten to Stockhütte (1,278 m); both rides take about 10 minutes. Check the map to see which area you’d like to explore. For our visit, we chose Klewenalp because it hosts the ski school and has a beginner zone with a magic carpet. Guests can ski, hike, or sled between the two areas, and the valley stations are connected by a 10-minute bus ride. It’s even possible to go up one way and come down the other. Always check the official website for up-to-date lift openings and webcams to confirm weather conditions, and be sure to note the time of the last return gondola.

Skiing for Families
This alpine region is wonderfully family-friendly, with several beginner and intermediate runs. Note that many of the ski lifts are T-bars. The beginner area at Klewenalp includes a magic carpet and a “learning zone” with small jumps. Rental equipment is available at Klewenalp daily, while Stockhütte rentals are typically available on weekends only. Lessons can be booked in advance for all levels. A unique highlight is the night skiing experience — just check the website for current dates and times. While our family didn’t ski during this trip, we saw many families enjoying the slopes. Another great perk for families: kids under 10 ski for free, making this an especially budget-friendly destination.

Sledding Adventures
During our visit, we focused on sledding near the Klewenalp cable car station. Next to the beginner area, there is a steep sledding hill that my son loved. There’s also a designated sledding hill accessible via the free magic carpet — perfect for our youngest daughter to ride with her dad. We brought our own sleds and helmets, but rentals are available near the cable car station if needed. Several longer sledding runs on the mountain look great for future visits. Like skiing, night sledding is also available on select evenings for an extra thrill.

Other Activities and Amenities
There are plenty of additional family-friendly activities and amenities on the mountain. Our kids really enjoyed the playground next to the cable car station, which features swings, a zip line, and a slide. Beyond the slopes, you can explore various snowshoeing and winter hiking trails offering stunning views of Lake Lucerne. For a truly unique experience, you can book a Pistenbully (snowplow) ride in the evening via the official website. When hunger strikes, several mountain restaurants across the area serve traditional Swiss fare.

Tickets and Arrival
Tickets can be purchased online or at the valley station ticket counters. If you buy online, use the kiosks near the stations to quickly retrieve your physical cards. As mentioned, kids under 10 ride ski for free, and there are also special tickets for hikers and sledders who aren’t skiing. Discounts are available for holders of the Half-Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, and Junior Cards. The staff at the ticket windows are very friendly and helpful if you have any questions. Both Beckenried and Emmetten have paid parking lots — the lot at Beckenried costs CHF 5 per day and fills up quickly on sunny weekends, so early arrival is recommended. We also found the parking attendants especially helpful with traffic guidance on busy days.

Final Thoughts
Klewenalp-Stockhütte offers a fantastic variety of winter activities for families. Our kids loved the sledding, and having a dedicated hill with a magic carpet made it extra convenient. The playground near the station was also a huge hit. While we mainly focused on sledding, the mountain offers so much more — from skiing and snowshoeing to evening snowplow rides. Its proximity to Lucerne makes it an easy, stress-free day trip. For more family-friendly winter activities, check out our blog.
