Hallwyl Castle is a beautiful moated castle in northern Switzerland, surrounded by water and lush greenery, making it one of the prettiest castles we have visited. Watching the swans glide across the moat adds an almost fairy-tale feel. Located about 45 minutes west of Zurich, Hallwyl Castle is a great option for a family day trip. Plan to spend around 2–3 hours touring the grounds and museum.
History of the Castle
The origins of Hallwyl Castle date back to the 12th century when it was first constructed by the noble Hallwyl family. Over the centuries, it grew into a grand moated residence, symbolizing the family’s influence in the region. Generations of Hallwyl nobles lived here until the late 1800s, when the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In 1994, the castle was officially bestowed to the Canton of Aargau, which carefully restored the complex to its current condition. Thanks to these extensive renovations, visitors today can experience one of Switzerland’s most picturesque castles.
Plan Your Visit
Hallwyl Castle is arranged around a large central courtyard, with bridges crossing the moat that guide visitors into the different wings. At the entrance, a short film with English and German narration introduces the castle’s story. As you climb the stairs, you’ll find a variety of rooms to explore and a few interactive stations where children can press buttons and learn more about daily life inside a medieval castle. Compared to other castles in Switzerland, the rooms are less richly furnished and have fewer exhibits. The attic area includes fun installations for children—such as a mirrored room, a knight’s camp setup, and other hands-on exhibits. We planned our visit during a special Archery Day, where both kids and adults could try out bows and arrows at targets. These themed events bring a wonderful energy to the visit, so it’s worth checking the event calendar before planning your trip.
Other Amenities
Tickets can be purchased at the small entrance gift shop, which also sells books and souvenirs. Strollers are permitted in the courtyard but cannot be brought into the castle rooms. Visitors can securely store items in lockers inside the bistro. The on-site bistro, offering indoor and outdoor seating, is a pleasant place to relax, with choices like hotdogs, salads, sandwiches, soups, and cold drinks. Paid parking is available directly across the street from the castle entrance, making access convenient for families arriving by car.
Conclusion
Hallwyl Castle is a gem among Swiss castles, with its storybook moat, swan-filled waters, and inviting courtyard. While the museum exhibits may not be as richly furnished or interactive as some other castles in Switzerland, children will enjoy the special events held on-site, such as archery. For families visiting Zurich or northern Switzerland, Hallwyl Castle offers a charming blend of history, scenic beauty, and accessible family-friendly amenities.
