A visit to Castle Thun is the perfect family adventure, especially on a cloudy day when the mountain views are not at their best. Nestled above the charming town of Thun, this medieval fortress promises 1–2 hours of exploration, history, and fun for all ages. With its dramatic towers and panoramic views over Lake Thun and the Alps, the castle is a great activity.

Background and History
Thun Castle, built around 1200 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen, was originally a symbol of power rather than a royal residence. Its impressive donjon, or main tower, features a vast Knights’ Hall—one of the best-preserved medieval halls in Switzerland. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of the Kyburg family and then the city of Bern, serving as both an administrative center and a prison. Today, it houses a museum that brings the region’s rich history to life.

Scavenger Hunt and Panoramic Views
Our family visit began with a scavenger hunt for the kids, who were given a challenge to locate hidden worms throughout the castle’s exhibits after we bought our tickets. Their excitement grew with each discovery, and at the end, they proudly chose a treat from the treasure chest in the gift shop. The castle also offers costumes, allowing children to dress up as knights and other historical figures, which was a huge hit. Climbing the narrow stairs to the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding Alps—a highlight for everyone. Note: the many stairs make strollers impractical, so plan accordingly.

Tickets can be purchased right at the entrance, and there’s a discounted family ticket for two adults and two children. Children five and under enter free, and if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, your admission is included. For those arriving by car, the City Ost Schlossberg parking garage is the most convenient option, with an elevator that takes you directly to the castle and down to the city center afterward. After your visit, take time to wander Thun’s medieval streets, cross its old wooden bridges, and watch surfers riding the river waves. For more information on things to do in the area, click here.

Castle Thun is more than just a rainy-day backup—it’s a destination in its own right, offering a blend of history, hands-on activities, and stunning scenery.
