Exploring Sonnenpark Gitschberg: The Ultimate Family Playground in the Dolomites

Our family spent an unforgettable afternoon at Sonnenpark Gitschberg, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites—a true alpine playground perched high above the valleys. With two hours to explore, we discovered the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and stunning scenery, making it an ideal destination for families seeking fresh mountain air and plenty of fun.

History and Overview of Sonnenpark Gitschberg

Sonnenpark Gitschberg, also known as Gitschberg Sun Park, sits at 2,018 meters above sea level and is part of the renowned Gitschberg Jochtal holiday area in South Tyrol. This region is famous for its sun-drenched plateaus, welcoming alpine villages, and rich history, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Playground: Fun for Kids and Parents Alike

The playground at Sonnenpark came highly recommended by our hotel, and our kids’ eyes lit up when they heard about the large play area. This alpine playground is packed with sun-themed attractions, including multiple long slides, climbing structures, a climbing igloo, and a swinging bridge. Our children were especially thrilled by the dueling giant slides, racing each other again and again while we soaked in the breathtaking mountain views. The playground is accessible with a sturdy stroller, though keep in mind the path from the cable car is downhill (about five minutes), and the return trip is uphill—something to plan for with little ones or heavy gear.

Amenities and Family-Friendly Trails

Next to the cable car station, you’ll find a cozy restaurant called Nesselhütte, perfect for a snack or meal with a view. The area also serves as a gateway to many family-friendly trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes. While we didn’t venture out on a hike this time, popular routes include the walk to the Gitschhütte hut (which also has a restaurant) and other scenic trails offering spectacular vistas.

Getting There: Cable Car and Accommodation Tips

Getting to Sonnenpark is easy with the Nesselbahn cable car, which departs from a large, free parking lot at the base station. Note that there is a midway station—make sure to stay on the cable car until you reach the top of the mountain. We stayed at the nearby Familiamus Familiehotel, which provided us with a Südtirol Guest Pass, meaning our cable car rides were included at no extra cost. Be sure to check with your accommodation, as many hotels in the area offer this valuable perk.

In conclusion, Sonnenpark Gitschberg is a fantastic destination for families visiting the Dolomites. With its outstanding playground, accessible amenities, and beautiful mountain setting, it’s the perfect spot to create lasting memories together—whether you’re seeking adventure or simply a place to relax and play.
