Mount Rigi, known as the “Queen of the Mountains,” offers a fantastic family adventure with its mountain railways and scenic views. On a sunny day, you can see up to 620 Alpine summits from the top of the mountain at Rigi Kulm. This accessible railway is very stroller-friendly, and the mountain features stroller-friendly paths, ensuring the whole family can enjoy the experience. Additionally, the thermal baths at Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad provide stunning views of Lake Lucerne. To make the most of these spectacular sights, check the webcams online before your visit.

History and Background
The Rigi cogwheel train, inaugurated in 1871, is Europe’s first mountain railway. Originally connecting Vitznau to Rigi Staffelhöhe, it climbs 1,115 meters over a 5-kilometer route. Riggenbach’s visionary project sparked a boom in Alpine tourism and inspired similar railways across Europe. Today, passengers can ride in beautifully restored historic carriages, some dating back to the early 20th century. Be sure to check the website for updated timetables.

Visit to Rigi Kulm
When my daughter was young, we took the train to Rigi Kulm and marveled at the breathtaking views—on clear days, you can see 24 of Switzerland’s 26 cantons. The self-service restaurant at Rigi Kulm Hotel serves classic Swiss dishes like schnitzel and sausage. The large terrace is perfect for enjoying sunny weather and panoramic vistas, and I appreciated being able to push a stroller right up to the restaurant.

Relax at Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad
For a relaxing break, visit Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad. The warm mineral water pools, whirlpools, and bubble loungers offer a unique experience with stunning mountain views. Kids aged 4 and up are welcome in the pool area (though not in the steam bath or sauna). Towels are not provided but can be rented, and lockers are included with admission. Showers and changing rooms are available for convenience. If you’re hungry afterward, Restaurant Alpina is located just across the train tracks from the spa.

Strolling Along Lake Promenade in Vitznau
After exploring Mount Rigi, take a leisurely walk along Vitznau’s lake promenade. This charming town features scenic views of Lake Lucerne, lush green spaces, and vibrant flower displays. It’s an ideal spot to relax on a park bench while watching boats glide across the water.

Purchasing Tickets
Children up to 16 years old travel free on most mountain railways when accompanied by an adult. The Rigi Day Pass is a convenient option for exploring the area, covering rides from Vitznau or Arth-Goldau to Rigi Kulm. For shorter trips (e.g., just visiting the spa), return tickets from Vitznau are ideal. Discounts are available with Half-Fare Cards or Swiss Travel Passes. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gift shop at the Vitznau station.

How to Get There
Vitznau is accessible by boat from Lucerne—a scenic one-hour journey—or by car (a small parking garage near the bus stop fills quickly on weekends). Arriving early in the morning is recommended for easier parking
