Scenic Views from UTO Kulm
Uetliberg rises to 870 m (2,850 ft.), with its summit known as UTO Kulm. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the Alps in the distance. The landmark communication tower offers an even higher vantage point, but climbing to the top requires a ticket. We find the observation terraces more than enough to enjoy the scenery, so we have never climbed the tower ourselves. On a clear winter day, the views are breathtaking.
Winter Activities for Families
UTO Kulm is ideal for family-friendly winter activities. Curling, a toboggan run, and snowy hiking trails are all available. We love curling, which can be booked by the hour for groups. The rink uses a synthetic surface that mimics ice and sits in a beautiful setting overlooking Zurich. In the evenings, string lights create a cozy atmosphere, and chairs along the track make for comfortable breaks. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made online. One Christmas, our family held a friendly curling competition, with a Swiss Chocolate Cow figurine as the grand prize—a memory we’ll never forget. Pairing the game with dinner at the hotel makes for a perfect ending to the day.

The Winter Magic Christmas Market is a small but charming event held annually at Uetliberg. It features local crafts, handmade soaps and lotions, and delicious food. Festive decorations provide plenty of photo opportunities for families. We enjoyed strolling through the market and soaking up the holiday spirit. Dining Options on the Mountain
In winter, UTO Kulm offers several dining choices. Outdoor stands serve snacks like raclette, which we enjoyed while playing Uno on the terrace. For a more traditional experience, the fondue hut is a cozy option—perfect after outdoor activities. The hotel restaurant also serves fondue and other Swiss classics, with a welcoming atmosphere for families. We’ve had wonderful dinners here, and reservations are advisable during the holiday season. How to Get There
Uetliberg is car-free, so you’ll need to hike in or take the train. We usually park at Parkplatz Feldermoos and walk five minutes to “Uitikon Waldegg” station. Train tickets can be purchased via the SBB app or at station machines, and various travel discounts apply, including Half-Fare Cards, Swiss Travel Passes, and Junior Cards. The ride to “Uetliberg” station takes roughly 10 minutes, followed by a 10-minute uphill walk to UTO Kulm. The trail is manageable with strollers. On one occasion, a member of our group had mobility challenges. Thanks to our dinner and curling reservations, we arranged for a hotel vehicle to collect us from the station—something we greatly appreciated. Always check the mountain webcam for conditions, and dress warmly for your trip.
