Einsiedeln is a charming town just 40 minutes south of Zurich, best known for the historic Einsiedeln Abbey—a beautiful Benedictine monastery. During the winter months, this alpine town transforms into a family-friendly snow destination. Thanks to its higher elevation, there’s usually plenty of snow for outdoor fun, including skiing, cross-country skiing, winter hikes, and—our family favorite—sledding in Einsiedeln. Plan for at least an hour of sledding before everyone is pleasantly tired and ready for a warm treat.
The Sledding Hill with Abbey Views
Overlooking the abbey is a large, scenic sledding hill in Einsiedeln that’s perfect for families. You can park at the paid lot Parkplatz Friedhof, conveniently located near a small paid ski area featuring a beginner slope with a magic carpet and a dedicated sledding section. To reach the main sledding hill (Schlittelzone), walk around to the opposite side of the Friedhof Einsiedeln (the local cemetery). You’ll likely spot families sledding with the abbey’s twin towers rising in the background. This area is free to use, but there’s no magic carpet—so be ready to hike back up the hill each time. The wide slope offers plenty of space for everyone to sled safely and avoid collisions.
Tips for Visiting the Einsiedeln Sledding Hill
Before heading out, check the Einsiedeln webcams to confirm snow conditions and current weather. Bring your own sleds, as there’s no rental service at the hill itself. You’ll pass several sports shops on the drive into town if you need winter gear. Helmets are highly recommended for children, and snow goggles help protect little faces from flying snow. On sunny days, don’t forget sunscreen. Benches along the cemetery wall overlook the hill—perfect for snack breaks with a view. Nearby toilets at the parking lot make the outing even more convenient for families.
Why We Love Sledding in Einsiedeln
Our kids absolutely loved sledding here. They were worn out from climbing the hill but completely thrilled by the fast runs. After a few rounds, consider stopping by the Milch Manufaktur Einsiedeln for fondue and ice cream—a wonderful way to warm up. The abbey and the charming town are also well worth exploring. With its beautiful setting, easy access, and plenty of family fun, sledding in Einsiedeln makes for a memorable winter day trip from Zurich.
