As we stepped into the grandeur of the Zurich Opera House, our family was transported into a world of elegance. Located on Sechseläutenplatz, this iconic landmark has been a hub for opera, ballet, and musical performances since 1891. It was one of the first opera houses in Europe to use electric lighting, showcasing its innovative spirit when it opened. Its intimate auditorium, seating about 1,100 people, offers a unique experience, making it a standout among international opera houses. Our group included participants who enjoy performing in theater and dance, heightening our enthusiasm to explore and learn about this beautiful space.

Our 60-minute private tour took us behind the scenes, exploring the tailoring, orchestra pit, props, and costume departments, and even onto the stage itself. Standing on stage was a very memorable experience for everyone. The kids were fascinated by the props, including the large camel, while we adults marveled at the gorgeous neo-rococo auditorium. The tour offered a unique glimpse into how productions come to life, making it truly captivating. Our guide was personable, answered all our questions, and went the extra mile to engage our kids. My son got to make thunderstorm noise using a metal sheet prop like they do during performances. My daughter enjoyed opening the many cabinets and, to her absolute delight, found hundreds of shoes. Please note that the tour is not stroller-friendly due to the presence of stairs.

The Zurich Opera House is easily accessible by public transit, and there is a large parking garage, Parkhaus Opéra. This experience not only deepened our appreciation for the performing arts but also provided a memorable family experience amidst the cultural heart of Zurich.
