Discover the Musée National de l’Automobile in Mulhouse: A Museum for Car Lovers and Families

A visit to the Musée National de l’Automobile in Mulhouse is a dream come true for car lovers. My husband loves cars, so we had to check it out. Housed in a vast former textile mill, the museum boasts the world’s largest automobile collection-over 500 vehicles from more than 90 brands, including legendary Bugattis, Rolls-Royces, Ferraris, and more. The core of the collection was assembled by the Schlumpf brothers, and today it spans more than 20,000 m², offering a journey through automotive history from the late 19th century to modern times. We spent around two hours at the museum, but car enthusiasts could easily stay longer.

As we strolled through the exhibits, we were impressed by the sheer number and variety of cars. It can be overwhelming, and we were fortunate to visit on the Monday following Easter. There was an egg coloring station set up for kids, and the Easter bunny gave out baskets so the children could find four different colored eggs. The kids enjoyed exploring the museum while searching for eggs, which gave my husband time to relax and read about all the cars. For children, there’s also a dedicated karting track for ages 4 to 8, where they can safely race mini vehicles for an additional cost. Young visitors can hop on a small electric train for a fun tour of the museum or try arcade games.

For those eager to get behind the wheel, the museum features a test track (Autodrome) where adults can drive classic or modern sports cars. We enjoyed watching guests drive both classic and modern sports cars on the track.

When it’s time for a break, families can relax at L’Atelier Bar, which offers drinks and snacks, or head to the cafeteria or restaurant for a full meal. There is a large pay car park in front of the museum entrance. Whether you’re a lifelong gearhead or just looking for a fun family day out, the Musée National de l’Automobile is a great choice to explore.
