Discover Harder Kulm: Stunning Views, Family-Friendly Fun, and Easy Access from Interlaken

Harder Kulm is a beautiful destination offering stunning views of the snow-capped Alps and lovely lakes. It is easily accessible via a historic funicular from Interlaken. The funicular, known as the Harderbahn, opened in 1908 and climbs 734 meters in just 10 minutes to the summit at 1,322 meters. If possible, try to sit in the front part of the funicular for clear views and some seating.

Panoramic Views and Attractions at the Summit

At the top, you’ll find breathtaking panoramic views of both Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, as well as the Bernese Alps. A highlight is the viewing platform, which offers spectacular perspectives of the turquoise Lake Brienz and the deep blue Lake Thun. There is also a cow statue on the bridge that my children love. Nearby, a playground close to the restaurant provides more amazing views for families.

Accessibility and Dining Experience

Families will appreciate that the path from the funicular station to the Panorama Restaurant is mostly flat and paved. However, there are stairs to access the funicular, which can make it difficult to bring a stroller. The restaurant is well worth a visit, especially if you book a dinner reservation timed for sunset to enjoy the stunning views. Be aware that long lines often form to board the funicular for sunset, so allow ample time. When demand is high, the funicular runs continuously.

Restaurant Offerings and Practical Tips

The restaurant menu includes traditional Swiss dishes like fondue alongside burgers and pizza, with a kids’ menu available. Baby chairs are also provided for little ones. While the restaurant is on the pricier side, the mountain location and stunning views justify the cost. Be sure to check the weather before you go, as it can get chilly after sunset.

Tickets, Discounts, and Parking

Tickets for the funicular can be purchased at the station. Holders of Swiss Travel Cards or Half Fare cards receive a discount. Check the last funicular departure time carefully to avoid being stranded at the top. Tickets are relatively expensive, so it’s wise to check the online webcam to see current views before purchasing. There is no parking at the funicular station, but drop-off is possible. Some street parking is available nearby, and several parking lots are located next to the Interlaken Ost train station.

Overall, Harder Kulm offers an easy, memorable outing for families with minimal walking and spectacular natural beauty.
