Nestled on the shores of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, the Giessbach Waterfall and the historic Grandhotel Giessbach offer a magical family day out just a short drive from Interlaken and Lucerne. The area is famed for its breathtaking natural beauty, with the roaring falls and the grand hotel set against a backdrop of mountains and forest. We have visited multiple times, and this is one of our favorite spots to bring visitors, who always love this experience.

Exploring the Giessbach Falls
The Giessbach Falls tumble down in 14 spectacular tiers, plunging nearly 400 meters from the high valleys into Lake Brienz. From the parking lot or the hotel, a scenic trail leads you up alongside the waterfall. Along the way, you can walk behind the thundering cascade and cross charming bridges, pausing often to snap photos of the Grandhotel and the turquoise lake below. The path is not stroller-friendly and has some steeper sections, but the hike is short-less than an hour from the parking lot to the hotel-with plenty of stops for pictures. The views are simply unforgettable.

The Historic Grandhotel Giessbach
The Grandhotel Giessbach itself is a step back into the Belle Époque. Built in 1873–74, this elegant hotel was saved from demolition in the 1980s thanks to a campaign led by Swiss environmentalist Franz Weber, and it reopened in restored splendor in 1984. Inside, the Victorian décor is enchanting, with a cozy lobby bar perfect for coffee or hot chocolate (my kids’ preference). Make sure to explore the charming salon and a game room offering views of the lake.

Dining and Amenities
Downstairs, the Les Cascades restaurant serves delicious food with waterfall views and is very family-friendly, with baby chairs, a kids’ menu, and a changing room. I recommend making a reservation online to ensure you get a table with the best waterfall view next to the window, as it can get busy during the peak summer season. On sunny days, the Kehrli Terrace is also a lovely spot for a snack or drink. While we haven’t stayed overnight, friends have raved about the experience-this hotel truly transports you to another era.

The Historic Giessbach Funicular and Access
A highlight for many families is the historic Giessbach funicular, the oldest tourist funicular in Europe, built in 1879. It connects the hotel to the boat dock on Lake Brienz. We love to walk down the trail from the hotel to the lake for more amazing views, then take the funicular back up-just remember, they only accept cash for tickets.

How to Get Here
Parking is easy, with a large public paid lot available, “Naturpark Giessbach Parking.” The road to the lot is narrow, so drive with care. If someone in your group has mobility issues, it’s worth calling ahead to see if you can arrange parking at the small private lot next to the hotel. If you’re staying in Interlaken, you can also reach the hotel by ferry across Lake Brienz-a beautiful way to start your adventure

With its stunning natural scenery, historic charm, and family-friendly amenities, Giessbach Falls and the Grandhotel Giessbach make an unforgettable destination for visitors of all ages looking to experience the best of the Bernese Oberland.
