Bellagio’s roots trace back to Roman times, and its strategic location at the tip of the peninsula dividing Lake Como into two branches has made it a coveted destination for centuries. In the 19th century, it became a favorite retreat for European aristocrats, and today, its central position makes it the perfect base for exploring all corners of Lake Como. With easy ferry access to neighboring towns like Varenna and Menaggio, Bellagio is truly a jewel of Lake Como.
Exploring Bellagio: Salita Serbelloni and Beyond
One of the highlights of our visit was wandering along Salita Serbelloni, Bellagio’s most famous street. This picturesque, stair-lined lane is bustling with tourists during the summer, but its stunning lake views, charming boutiques, and inviting restaurants make it a must-see. In the evenings, as the day-trippers depart, the street becomes delightfully peaceful—a perfect time for a family stroll. Since we stayed overnight in Bellagio, we could enjoy these quieter moments. With a young child in tow, we brought along our Yo-yo stroller, which was easy to fold and carry up the stairs. If you want to avoid the steps, the lakeside promenade is a wonderful alternative. Lined with vibrant flowers, it leads you toward the tranquil Melzi Gardens, offering panoramic views of the lake and mountains.
Discovering the Melzi Gardens
A short, scenic walk along the promenade brings you to the enchanting Melzi Gardens. Built in the early 1800s by Francesco Melzi d’Eril, vice president of the Italian Republic under Napoleon, the villa itself is private, but the gardens are open to visitors. We loved exploring the Japanese-style pond, the serene water lily pond, and the pathways shaded by ancient trees. It’s an ideal spot for kids to run free and enjoy nature. We left our stroller at the entrance for easier exploration, but the main paths are stroller-friendly if you prefer to bring it along. Where to Eat in Bellagio
Bellagio is a food lover’s paradise, with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and gelaterias. Our favorite was Ristorante Bilacus, located right on Salita Serbelloni. The ivy-shaded courtyard is a peaceful oasis, and the food was simply outstanding. If you’re visiting in peak season, be sure to reserve a table in advance. Another gem we discovered was Ristorante Alle Darsene di Loppia, situated in a small port at the southern entrance of Melzi Gardens. Exploring Lake Como by Ferry
Parking in Bellagio is extremely limited, and the narrow, pedestrian-only streets can be tricky to navigate by car. We highly recommend exploring Lake Como by ferry. The ferries are scenic, affordable, and stroller-friendly (most have ramps), making them ideal for families. A lightweight, foldable stroller like the Yo-yo is a smart choice if you plan to travel around the lake, or consider a child hiking backpack for even more flexibility.
Where to Stay in Bellagio
Given Bellagio’s many staircases, staying near the port is convenient—especially if you have young children or lots of luggage. For those seeking spectacular views, be prepared for a bit of a climb!
