Our family recently visited the Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory in Broc, Switzerland, located in the scenic canton of Fribourg near Gruyères. This popular Swiss chocolate factory tour is a fun and educational experience for families visiting the Gruyère region. As soon as we arrived, the aroma of chocolate filled the air and immediately set the tone for our adventure. At Maison Cailler, visitors can take a self‑guided chocolate factory tour, sample a variety of chocolates, join chocolate‑making workshops, shop at the large Cailler chocolate store, and enjoy the themed playground outside. Plan to spend about 2–3 hours exploring the factory and grounds.
Book Tickets in Advance
If you plan to visit the Cailler Chocolate Factory, we highly recommend booking tickets online in advance. During our first attempt, we arrived without tickets and discovered that the wait time for the next available tour was quite long. We decided to return another day and booked online beforehand, which made the experience much smoother. Once your time slot is called, each visitor receives an audio guide in their preferred language. The audio guide leads you through a series of immersive rooms that tell the history of chocolate and the story of Cailler, Switzerland’s oldest chocolate brand. My older son loved learning about the chocolate‑making process, while my three‑year‑old was mostly excited about the chocolate tasting at the end of the tour. There are also several interactive exhibits that make the experience especially engaging for families and children.
Chocolate Tasting and Chocolate Making
The highlight of our visit was definitely the chocolate tasting room. Visitors can sample a variety of Cailler chocolates, including some fresh from the production line. It was a fun and delicious experience for everyone. Another memorable part of the tour was watching a chocolatier create chocolate figures by hand, which gave us a glimpse into the craftsmanship behind Swiss chocolate. For visitors who want a more hands‑on experience, Maison Cailler also offers chocolate‑making workshops where guests can learn to create their own chocolate treats. We didn’t join a class during this visit, but we could see chocolatiers teaching guests in a large workshop room.
Cailler Chocolate Shop And Playground
Before leaving, be sure to visit the Maison Cailler chocolate shop, which offers a huge selection of Cailler chocolates and gifts. We filled a 100 g box with assorted chocolates to bring home, which was a fun way to try several different varieties. Outside the factory, there is a large chocolate‑themed playground that is perfect for families visiting with children. The playground includes slides and climbing structures and is a great place for kids to play before or after the tour. During our winter visit, there was snow on the ground, so we didn’t get to enjoy the playground as much as we would have liked.
Visitor Tips
The factory offers several practical amenities that make visiting easy for families.
- Lockers are available for coats and bags (requires a 1 or 2 CHF coin, which is returned).
- Free parking is available directly outside the Maison Cailler factory entrance.
- Plan to spend about 2–3 hours at the attraction.
- Booking tickets online helps avoid long wait times.
